I lived in Virginia for 11 years...I actually really liked it there. nod Loved the scenery, the people there were pretty nice as well (emphasis on "were" lol..no idea if they still are). Close to Washington D.C. and New York (from northern VA, New York is a 4 hour drive or a quick train ride). Weather's decent...never really got way too hot or way too cold.

oooh! I'm all about Virginia these days! After the way to looooong winter we had here in good ol NH last year and the weak summer we're having, I'm thinking Virginia has got to be the ideal place (weather wise) to live. Like you said...not too hot, and not too cold.
"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok

I'm sure you already know this but others may find it interesting nod

Virginia's name:

Virginia was named for the "virgin queen" of England, Queen Elizabeth I. She reigned England from 1533-1603.

"Old Dominion":

Virginia remained loyal to the English crown during the English Civil War and during Cromwell years (mid 1600's). When King Charles II regained the throne (1660), he gave Virginia the nickname the "Old Dominion."

We used to take class trips to VA and DC when I was growing up living in Maryland.
Very interesting and full of history.

nod After living in both Chicago and California, I've experienced some extreme hot and cold weather lol...While I lived in Virginia, it was rare for it to drop below 20 degrees and I could deal with the heat and humidity ok during the summer.

I HATED all the gnats flying around, though lol mad

never lived there but my hubby is from there so we visit. The cost of living is similar to california though, so we are hesitant to move there in spite of the fact that he owns land there.

it is beautiful though, his home is about an hour from the NC state line..not far from you mach wink

I haven't lived there, but have been there several times. Absolutely beautiful country. Very green, hilly, and the real estate is pretty cheap (in the rural areas).

Byron mentions bugs. That is indeed a problem.

I really loved it there!

I have been looking and I have not seen anything cheap but my searches have been scattered and close to larger cities.

I used to live in Florida, I am used to bugs. lol

I think the place I looked at prices was a small town. I'm sure anything near DC is gonna be expensive.

I was trying to stay closer to the west of Virginia since my family is in Tennessee.

I am not sure that I would want to live close to DC.

What part of Virginia are you looking at?

Northern VA is nice, but extremely expensive and congested. You are however close to lots of attractions.

I live in the Richmond area. Still a great city IMO. It's smaller, but still lots to do. Nice restaurants, shopping, activities. Very nice houses, but not too expensive. You would be about an hour and a half from the ocean.

The western part of the state is gorgeous in it's own right. Mountains. Peaceful. Nice houses. I don't know about work out there though.

Virginia provides you the opportunity to have city life, but still be close to the ocean and the mountains.

It's gets hot and humid in the summer, but the winters are mild comparitively.

It's got excellent universities.

I love it here.

Can't see myself leaving.

If you want to know anything specific let me know and I'll try and help you.
