Have you ever cried when a family pet died?

When I was growing up we had lots of pets dogs cats hamsters fish rabbits etc but the only time I cried is when the family dog that had been there since the day I was born had to be put down aged 20. I remember because it had gone blind couldnt walk and was incontinent I remember the day because I had to carry it out to the car to be taken to the vets to be put down. I remember looking at its face for the final time before the door was shut and thinking thats the last time I would ever see it alive that just killed me and I started crying like a baby for about 20 minutes. sad sad

No.

But I'm weird. I'm a bleeding heart who often cries at the drop of a hat, but for some things I can be strangely cold.

Yes single one. My parents had a dog when I was born. He died when I was 11 yrs old. My dad was very physically abusive to my mom and our pets. I saw and heard our pets being mistreated. That made me cry.
We had a dog that was hit and killed at the top of our driveway where we stood waiting for the bus. I heard him get hit and I cried when I was told that he was killed and saw his blood on the road.
I was an only child so I was very close to our pets growing up.

Heck, I made a bunch of noise over a goldfish dying when I was a kid. Because of that my poor dad was a bundle of nerves when he had to tell me my favorite dog got hit and killed. disbelief It wasn't pretty.

My ex and I had to take our dog to be put down on July 15th.

I've been crying daily since then. I miss her so much. She loved me and she was my protector.

God, yes.

I was 11 when the family dog had to be put down, she was about 14 or 15. She had a horrible cough, weak heart and could barely walk without falling over.

Still, even knowning the vet was coming we were all hope it'd just be a cold or something fixable.

It was pretty much the first time my ENTIRE family cried over someone. My grandma's usually as tough as they come and she was in tears. That doggie made one hell of an impression on our family. She was beautiful.

As much as I cried for the whole of easter after it happened I couldn't imagine being my aunty who lives two states away and had to be told by phone. I don't even know if she knew how sick she was. cry

That was in 2001. Damn, that year sucked in so many ways.

I'm actually surprised that this is even a legitimate question! My pets have been fully-fledged members of our family, and I have sobbed at the loss of each one, and endured months of depression. I'm actually incapable of understanding any other way to be about it.

omfg hug I'm sorry to hear about your dog. It's never easy having to put an animal to sleep. I've had to put two cats down already due to illness, and it's the hardest thing I've ever had to do. When I was younger, I used to have gerbils. When one of them would die, I would cry like I lost my best friend. Pets become part of your family, so I can understand crying and feeling sad when they're gone and are no longer a part of our lives.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

grouphug To everybody who has ever loved a pet and lost it.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

bawl bawl This seriously makes me cry every time I read it. I remember when I had to put one of my cats down, and started a thread about it on the org. Someone was kind enough to post this on the thread, and I made the mistake of reading it at work. I immediately starting crying and had to go into the bathroom to get myself composed again. redface boxed It sux being a hard-core animal lover like myself. lol
