Mach

I have lived in Michigan,Montana,Alabama,Florida and North Carolina

I would not want to move back to Florida nor Alabama again

Michigan would be okay though only up north
Montana would rock
My home and heart is In NC and I love where I live ~ REALLY LOVE it

My reasons would really be meaningless to you

Hmmm. Diving.

Well, the ocean is close but the water is COLD!!! People surf with wetsuits. It's not a hot sunny beach like So. Cali or Florida. But Phil could dive if he wanted to . . . neutral

I'm guessing you're looking for someplace southern, then. sad Personally, I think the benefits of here outweigh the negatives -- I couldn't live in the South; TOO hot, certain attitudes mad . . . and California catches on fire every single year. Plus expensive.

One thing about this area, there is no scary weather i.e. tornadoes, earthquakes, violent storms, hurricanes. There is Mt. St Helens and Mt Hood is a dormant volcano. But they're so pretty! biggrin I can see Mt. Hood from my bedroom and I live 75 miles away.

A last link: http://www.movingtoportla...verton.htm

He learned to dive in England... he is used to cold water. Besides..they make wet suits for cold water....right?

I love cold water diving except for the mangina it produces lol

But it's really not that bad!

People fear it when they move here, but once you're here the rest of it is so great you get by. hmph!

And you can't beat the change of seasons. From hot, steamy summers, to cool crisp falls with leaves so gorgeous you could cry. OK, yeah winter sucks, but snow is always beautiful at least, and then spring comes and green returns and everyone comes outside again.

I seem to remember a certain orger with red hair cursing the snow this past winter. Ranting and raving over how bad it sucked.

Well if you move up north, you only have to worry about dormant volcanoes.....which, most likely will cause an earthquake.

Still, please move to the West Coast.

OMG -- Portland is one of the most dog-friendly cities on this planet, I think! Lots of parks and walking trails, I've seen little dogs being walked thru malls, all kinds of stores and groups dedicated to the little buddies. Water dishes and doggy biscuits offered at shops.

It rains too much there...cloudy all the time is depressing.

That's why I love the change of seasons in the Mid West so much. If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it'll change. Except for the winter when it's as cloudy all the time (like the Pacific NW).

The green everywhere is nice though...and you can't beat that no sales tax thing...how's property taxes?

I am happy in my little corner of the world, Santa Barbara, California. cool
I am a native Santa Barbaran, so I am bias. But I love the weather, living close to the ocean, and having the view of the mountains wherever you are. I also love the Spanish influence architecture and the very strict restriction on business signs...all business signs are non flashy and low to the ground in order to not clutter our view. Very peaceful.

I must disagree about the rains and clouds -- it REALLY isn't much different from the Midwest in the winter, IMO -- except for lacking the blizzards and sub-zero temps. It can be a bit dreary but besides the fact that it doesn't get freezing cold here, that rain makes for the most beautiful Spring/Summer/Falls that I've ever seen. And the Hood Strawberries!!!!! drool It did rain here Tuesday, but it hasn't rained since June -- it's needed! wink We do get snow a couple times a season -- pretty much shuts the city down 'cause they don't use salt on the roads. But the heaviest coat I need is a trenchcoat.

The clouds in the winter make it ideal for snuggling up inside, visiting friends, drinking delicious, fresh- roasted, in-house coffee at a little shop.

Weather

Portland's weather belies the stereotype of the rainy Pacific Northwest. Our average annual rainfall is less than that of Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle.

Which is not to say that it doesn't rain in Portland. It does, on average, 36.3" per year. But the precipitation keeps Portland impossibly green - and helps enforce a casual, comfortable dress code. (What else would you expect in the home of Pendleton, NIKE and Columbia Sportswear?)

Click the link for a chart of average temperature and rainfall: http://www.travelportland...ather.html

Property taxes? Well, I'm a renter so I don't have to worry about that personally. It probably depends much on where you live. I've heard that people feel that the taxes are high-ish -- but, no place is perfect. It IS a nice place to live and the property is quite good-looking. For me, knowing that something costs $9.99, I give 'em a $10 and I get a penny back continues to thrill! nod

Thanks for the opinions.
Who knows what the future holds.

There are some wonderful parts of the states that I have visited. Though like Florida, a lot of places are nicer to visit than to live in.
