I just got Star Wars Episode II on DVD for my son and I have concluded that the acting is not good. There is some really bad acting in this movie... especially by the guy who played Anakin (sp?) Skywalker... that guy just can't act at all... he is bad. Some other guys turned in some sub-standard performances as well, but my son really likes it so I don't mind. I think the Anakin guy was great!
I honestly think the special effects ruined it. Too many, and not too perfect. Also, where were the deleted scenes with meaning? The lost 20 etc?

The guy who played Anakin was the second choice. James Earl Jones was originally offered the part, but when they told him he had to lose 138 lbs and put on "white skin," his eyes turned red and he telekinetically lifted a lightsaber and split the members of the negotiating team in half!

I don't have the DVD...yet. I have all the others, so my "gotta have everything" attitude will most likely send me 2 the store and scoop this one up 2.
It's been marketed as the 1st truly "all digital" DVD ever released... this being that the movie was actually shot in complete DIGITAL "film"...pixel by pixel. So the transfer 2 DVD is supposed 2 b superb. Did u notice any of this Ice? Does it make a difference as far as DVD's go? I must admit, I am intrigued! As far as the young man's acting? I thought he did great! I loved the slight "touch" of evil he displayed during one of his arguments with Obi-Wan. It kinda hinted at his Darth-ness within... Plus, I gotta agree with SkletonKee, who really ever went 2 see these films because of the acting? Plus (part II), Yoda kicked ass in this one... he was completely digitized 4 this film, and his facial expressions and body movement were by far the best of all of these movies. Just my |

Plus (part II), Yoda kicked ass in this one... he was completely digitized 4 this film, and his facial expressions and body movement were by far the best of all of these movies. If you have High Def, the picture will be better looking. A nice thing is that there are know artifacts from the source film, so it's clean, very little pixelation, sharp contrasting, it'll look good. However, it's not the furst truly digital transfer DVD. All computer animated DVDs were coded directly from the computer. This is just the first live action digital transfer. As for the acting, the old Star Wars movies didn't have that bad acting. I mean, they for the most part weren't oscar winning roles, but never did I think that there acting was contrived enough that it took me out of the fantasy world. Episode II was the worst episode I've seen so far. I couldn't STAND that romance! It was so contrived. Episode II made episode I look good, and that's not saying much. Yoda did kick some major ass though. I'm really looking forward to the next installment of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. I've not been fussed about either of the last two SW movies.
They should have called it with Return of the Jedi. Some parts of history should be left well alone.

I will also buy the dvd, I loved the movie though, I felt that Anakin sometimes really looked like a future vader and that the emotional struggle came over very well... okay it's not worthy of an oscar but be honest Star Wars just is fun and an adventure, and yes sometimes acting is bad but that doesn't mean it's less of an adventure "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

Lucas says himself that he bases these films on the old black and white serials like Flash Gordon (no great acting there) and to a large extent these films are supposed to be viewed like silent movies.
the actors are secondary in the way the story is told.Environments, music and effects are what drive the story. It isn't supposed to be Shakespeare, and thank F*** for that.

Damn!!! Like everyone has been saying, no, it's not Oscar winning acting, but it ain't THAT bad either!!! It's right on par with the first 3 films as far as the acting, IMHO!
And for those complaining about Hayden's acting as Anakin, he's acting like he was TOLD to by Lucas!! And I saw no problems in how he was acting. It seems to fall right in line with what's going on with his character (he's trying to be mature and be a Jedi, yet tormented by wanting to see his momma, be a kid, and get some senator pussy! LOL!) and what's to come in the future. Am I the only one who sees this?? The main problem I had with this DVD is the lack of extra content!! Where are all of the extra deleted scenes, bloopers (y'all KNOW there were some), the behind-the-scenes documentaries of when they were shooting in Tunisia, Australia, etc..., and parts that show the fans reactions from the first to the premiere date in LA??? There are so many more things they could've added to this sucker it's not even right, especially considering that they put the same stuff in the first DVD, and that movie wasn't half as good as this one!!! Ah well...

I thought the Extras were great, and they are as long as you haven't seen them previously on the official site. [This message was edited Wed Nov 13 7:43:34 PST 2002 by Thecherryloon]

Star Wars: Episode II
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s release of 'Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones' once again contains a good number of hidden features that are a bit tricky to find. The first DVD of the set contains three different menu themes that are selected randomly upon boot-up of the disc. However you can select any of the three themes directly by pressing the '1', '2' or '3' key during the FBI logo. On the first disc you can also find a blooper reel with DVD production credits. To see it highlight the THX logo on the screen and then press the numbers '1138' on your remote control. Alternatively you can also directly access Title 3 on the DVD for this feature. Please consult your player’s manual how to directly access titles as every player is handling this differently. Now insert the second disc of the set and select 'Dex’s Kitchen and Still Galleries.' In the following menu select 'Dex’s Kitchen' and in the menu screen that follows highlight the 'Main Menu' menu entry. Now press the 'Left' arrow key on your remote control and a small panel will be highlighted. Press 'Enter' now and you will be taken to an additional still gallery with humorous posters from a College Campaign. These hidden features have been first reported to us by our reader Adam Bernstrom. From www.dvdreview.com ... Okay, first off, let me say, that I agree that Hayden's acting is simply atrocious. His lines are delivered like a bad high school play. He absolutely sucks shit through a straw! That having been said, I still love the film. Sure, the dialogue can be a bit corny, but it is in ALL the Star Wars films. Lucas has said time and again that these films are largely based on the Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials, and those thing had INCREDIBLY cheesy dialogue. Screenwriter Jonathan Hales, who collaborated with Lucas on the AOTC script, said that Lucas wanted much of the lines to reflect this style. In that regard, it is quite succesful. It is a big space epic for kids of all ages, but its not Shakespeare.
As far as the acting goes for the rest, well, it varies. Samuel L and Ewan Macgreggor put in good performances, although you often feel they are being held back somewhat. Portman's performance is inconsistent, sometimes reflecting a deeper talent, but other times you just get the feeling that Hayden is rubbing off on her. Temura Morrison's portrayl of Jango Fett is superb, showing a restraint and intensity that the role truly needed. Ian Macdermid puts in yet another fine show as Palpatine/Darth Sidious. Far and away, the best performances come from Christopher Lee, as villian Dooku, and Frank Oz, as the voice of Yoda. Lee is an actors actor, and he approaches the Saturday morning serial aspect of the story perfectly. He lets you see that this is a truly evil character, yet he never dives off into a camp performance, which is exactly what a lesser actor would do. Oz brings life to Yoda once again, and by now he has him down to a science. A big part of the reason that the final confrontation between Yoda and Dooku is so great, is because these two actors actually manage to convey the complex history and relationship between these characters. Many people who are highly critical of this film (and Phantom Menace) seem to be angry that Lucas is not doing what they expected. Many wanted these films to grow up with them. They cannot see the flaws of the original films, because they originally saw them with the eyes of a child. You'll be hard pressed to find a kid who doesn't love the last two Star Wars flicks as much as the originals, and that's because kids are (still) the target audience. Its hard to have the sense of awe over a movie that you did as a kid, becaue you are now a cynical adult. When you were a child, you weren't annoyed by the Ewoks, you thought they were cool. It is no different today with Jar Jar. everyone under the age of twelve loves him! If you were to see the original trilogy today, for the first time, as an adult, you would probably have many of the same complaints about it that you do about the last two movies. The Ewoks would annoy you. Leia's fake British accent and corny dialogue in the first one would make you giggle. Luke's whining would really piss you off. You would notice that Harrison Ford phones in his performance in ROTJ, because he didn't want to do the film. You would notice, in the same movie, that Carrie Fisher is coked out of her mind, and is almost unable to deliver her lines. Many of the creaures would look far more phony than any of the CGI ones from the last two. Far and away, you would notice that the whole series sounds like it was written in the 1950s. Instead of trying to view these films that way, I instead challenge you to take a different approach. Icenine had the right idea with letting his child be the judge. All in all, Star Wars is great family entertainment. It is a classic tale of good and evil, in a day and age when we don't have our own fairy tales. Sit down with a child, and watch this movie. Watch the child's reactions to all the imagery. If you do this, I think you will appreciate what Lucas is trying to accomplish with this series. Okay, that's my two cents. May The Force Be With You! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
