Johnny Depp to play Mad Hatter in upcoming Alice in Wonderland movie!

MSN

CelebEdge says:

Johnny Depp's Mad role

Johnny Depp is to team up with Tim Burton again, to play the Mad Hatter in a new version of 'Alice in Wonderland'.

(BANG) -

Johnny Depp is to play the Mad Hatter in a new version of 'Alice in Wonderland'.

The 'Sleepy Hollow' actor is teaming up with director Tim Burton again for the movie, a re-imagining of the classic children's tale.

A source said: "Tim has had designs on 'Alice in Wonderland' since before he was famous.

"He has a knack for turning what seems like stories for just kids into gripping, spooky fables loved just as much by adults.

"He's held out on doing 'Alice' until he got a big enough budget. Now this film is financed by Disney so money won't be a problem."

The movie - which is scheduled for release in 2010 - will be the seventh time Johnny and Tim have worked together.

They have previously collaborated on 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Ed Wood', 'Sleepy Hollow', 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'Corpse Bride' and 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'.

Disney produced an animated version of 'Alice in Wonderland' in 1951.

Meanwhile, Johnny is said to be teaming up with director Terry Gilliam to make 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'.

Work on the project was halted after just five days in 2001, with the setbacks chronicled in a documentary, 'Lost In La Mancha'.

Actor Jean Rochefort suffered a double hernia on the first day of filming, while the second day saw most of the set in Madrid washed away.

Johnny allegedly refused to wait for his co-star to recover before filming could begin again and pulled out of the role, causing financiers to pull their backing and the project being aborted.

A source revealed: "They are having another crack at it after putting a deal together. Johnny is a bigger star now than he was then, thanks to the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise, and there is every confidence they can pull it off."

Ooooh, Johnny Depp plays another fucking idiot.
He's been quirky long enough. Fuck all that. Let him make a fucking blockbuster in which he does't have to do all that Michael Jackson stuff.

While I feel a big budget adaptation is in order, I always cringe when I hear of any remake of this story as it has the potential of being terrible.

I feel a little better knowing Tim is on board and hopefully, he'll combine and add in elements of through the looking glass and it won't merely be a retelling of Disney's version.

Erm, I thought Charlie and the chocolate factory would be better. Another movie that didn't need to be remade.

Uhmmm. I thought it looked rather, ermmm, too sound-stagey. And Ricci was down-par. It was probably the first time Depp irritated me also. I think he can't even play just straight-up characters anymore, always hiding behind eccentricities and wacko stuff.

Give him a hat and he is GO! His movies just tire me out these days. He is just Keanu Reeves with a hat.

Now, come to think of it, I really liked Finding Neverland, which had me sobbing like a looney, but just cuz it dealt with the loss of a mother in the afterwake of having to go through that in real life at the time. That boy was fucking amazing. Hated him in The Choc factory. Fucking Oompa Loompa's. I loved the original.

And Mad Hatter. Did they go like;
Tim; "Uhm, you did one amazingly entertaining Disney movie and then pumped the audiences for two awful ones, just cuz they wanna see you acting MAD, Johnny. Let's re-do ANOTHER Disney movie! Which shall we do?"

Johnny; "Can I wear a hat?"

Tim; "Sure Johnny, whatever you want!..... now WAIT a minute!"

My broad features include a big heart. I still think he is an amazing artist. Often his anti-Hollywood choices made me a very happy baby. But it's like he is all props lately. I want some REAL acting, not him just being whacky.

Agreed...although I don't feel quite that passionate about it. lol He's done so many of these quirky roles that they're all running together for me. He's better than that. How is this any different than his taken on the Willy Wonka role?

I am not really passionate. I am just stirring up the fams.

I am passionate about SLEEPING...

WillyWonka

Here's what JD thinks about our opinions on his choices of roles:

But I agree with HamsterHuey: as aDEPPt (ha!) at them as he often is, Depp really should lay off the outrageous, cartoony characters for awhile. I thought he was subtle and touching in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, and I'd like to see him do a few roles again in that vein.

I love him in Gilbert Grape (though DiCaprio pretty much stole that movie), Secret Window and he was really sweet and touching in Finding Neverland. He's more versatile than the roles he tends to migrate to. I do have to say, I thought he was brilliant in the first Pirates movie, but I didn't feel it was a role that needed to be revisited, much less twice.

But really - does it get any better than his debut screen role? mr.green

I never liked the Charlie story, even when I was little...so I never saw the remake of it. lol

I just think there are SO MANY things you can do with Alice in Wonderland...I just figure its right up Burton's alley.
If he messes it up, I guess I'll just have to track him down. shrug lol
