Yes, and I respect him too. He had a strong positive character, and he went against the grain when he didn't have to.

Ouch! that is a hard question for me, I loved him for the fact he was my father, but I did not really like him as a person. He made so many mistakes in his life, he was an alcoholic since before I was even born. sad He had a brilliant mind for business, but he let his addiction get the best of him and failed miserably. His addiction made for a very hard life for us as children, and in the end even my mother became addicted.

I sure do. My dad is the greatest. He's 76 and I hope he lives another 20 years or more.

Thanks Moni, I have made peace with him in my heart. It's a sad cycle really, his father was an ass for what I understand (I never met him)

The only good of it is that it made me a strong person, and I love adore and worship my kids....and I have the utmost respect for alcohol, I like it, but I keep a fair distance, unless socially, then I enjoy a couple of margaritas on the rocks! It's all good. rose

It took many years to learn to understand him and his ways. He wasnt perfect, but now that i am a parent and have learned to see things from a parents point of view - i believe he did all he could with the training he had. Forgiveness has not been easy, but as i fought to forgive, i have been blessed with love instead of anger reguarding him. My father has been gone for nearly 20 years now.... what i would give to be able to sit and have a drink and talk about a few things with him sad
One of the best days of my life... http://prince.org/msg/100/291111

my dad is a very weird person ... I am totally out of touch with him and we don't think alike on ANY subject. I don't know if it is that way because he was mostly absent when I was growing up (working shifts).

Now he is retired, he's totally abandoning everything and trying to do what HE wants because he feels that "everybody" has taken away from him so much that he needs to put himself in the first place (oblivious to wife, children, grandchildren). I don't get that. As much as I want a happy family, I am seriously disappointed by (the fact that he will not make free time to spend with the family unconditional. It's always "come at 2pm, leave at 6pm, cuz at 6.15pm It's ME time" ... at least that's how I feel it.

He's been travelling the south of Europe (together with my mom) for the past three months. He's thinking about travelling Africa (backpacking ... no guide eek) for up to 5 months.

MY DAD IS CRAZY

mine is exactly the same

Absolutely. He rocks. Many good times with him. Many more, I hope. He's an awesome dad. I've only realized just how awesome he's been, as I've grown up.

neutral That doesn't sound crazy at all. Sounds like he's learning to set some boundaries. Fantastic for him that he's finally getting a chance to travel around the world. He's taking your mom, so what's the problem?
