The Ocean (and other places U R drawn 2) When was 19, shortly after was kicked out of my house, and had finally re-established myself in a crappy old apartment in a tiny college town of Montevallo, Alabama (google it if U really want 2 experience isolation), it dawned on me that it had been years since had seen the ocean. The last time saw it was at the age of 12 while on vacation in Clearwater, Florida.
So on my day off (I think it was a Monday), drove down 2 Pensecola (a 5 hour drive), by myself in my little 'ol Mercury Tracer. The drive would have been utterly boring as the landscape in South Alabama 2 Florida is flat with little more than farmland and forests broken up by an occasional factory of some sort; however, had taken a shortcut off the major highway through some tiny ass backroads. That was an adventure in and of itself. saw little tiny towns like Brewton Alabama, which seemed impossible that such a town could exist out in the middle of nowhere. America is a dazzling place when U get off the highways and search it's little secret passageways. Of course as an Asian guy, one does that in Alabama circa 1990 with a degree of caution.
Anyways, drove up 2 Pensacola, Florida early that evening, about 2 hours before the sun started 2 set, and went for a swim at Ft. Picken's beach. If anybody has been 2 Pensacola, you'll know that the sand looks like Sugar. It's blinding white and catches the color of the sky at night as it is setting turning pink, then orange, than grey from the moonlight. It's mesmerizing.
I had already signed my contract 2 join the military, and would be flying out 2 Lackland Air Force Base 2 months later. had joined for the training, for the excitement of travel--but mostly, 2 get the hell out of my trapped excisting and 2 live. Life had become mundane and hellish for me. Folk always think that when U aren't being bombarded by tragedy or drama--when your life is seemingly stable, that U are doing just fine. In reality, it's those slow times that makes U reflect on just how utterly worthless things around me were. How none of these things made me happy. This was not the life was supposed 2 be living. Not here. Not now. Not in Alabama of all places.
It was the beach that made me slow down and forget my worries. There is something 2 be said about staring out at the sunset and realizing all those seemingly insurmountable obstacles are illusory in nature. After having driven 5 hours 2 get there, spent 3 hours there and drove another 5 back But was better for having done so.
Since that time have shared a relationship with the ocean can't quite explain. It's where reflect. It's where would sit and cry my eyes out. It's where have fun. Where nap. It's where I've fallen in love. Where let everything just melt away. can not imagine a life away from it. can't imagine staying sane without it. Sure--it may surve as a proxy 2 something inside me that have trouble getting in touch with, but that's of no importance 2 me--I find the vast Gulf of Mexico absolutely intoxicating.
Where is YOUR place? . [Edited 7/21/08 20:18pm] | |

I'd like to be somewhere in the middle of the woods, miles and miles from anybody else. It's somewhat impractical, but it'll happen for me one day. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

I can't believe you just changed all the god damned "I"s to eyes.
That said, my place in Mpls. I just need a little walk in my city to make me feel good again. When I leave and come back seeing the skyline makes my heart skip a beat and an overwhelming feeling of comfort washes over me. It's home. |

google Montevallo Alabama. It's the next best thing. Looks pretty! But I'm planning on staying above the mason dixon line. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |
