If there were truly hardcore they wouldn't need no shoulder pads, helmets etc. To draw comparison to any form of Rugby they don't wear anything like that, some may wear very minimalistic headgear but no chunky ass helmets.
If they were to get rid of all that shit from Gridiron then you would REALLY see how "hardcore" they are Minimizing the risk of personal injury does not make a sport any less tough. I've watched a lot of rugby here in Australia, and while I don't really understand all the rules, I do enjoy it. That said, the athletes rarely (if ever) reach the same speed as those who play American football, because the contact is fairly continuous. It would be barbaric to play American football without protective gear. You miss the point, if they were to have no protective gear they wouldn't be playing to do the biggest hits on people then as they would have to think about how much of the impact they would take as well, hence Gridiron would become a lot more soft Receiving transmission from David Bowie's nipple antenna. Especially baseball... Now wait a minute. Baseball kicks ass! At least it does when it is played at a high level. However, you have to be schooled in the rules and nuances of the game at an early age to get a real appreciation of it. Otherwise, you'll lose some of the focus and get bored. Granted, most of the fun of baseball involves seeing the game live and not on TV. I can't vouch for the New York Yankees fans or Boston Red Sox fans, but here in Chicago where the Cubs are a huge attraction (even though it's been 100 years since they last won a title - literally), Wrigley Field is a great place to see a baseball game. Then again, just as many people go there to drink a lot of beer and hook up for dates as they do to see baseball. Even though I've watched a lot more auto racing in the last few years, I still don't quite get the whole appeal of NASCAR. The drivers basically run around in a circle and the only real excitement is to wait for a crash to happen. I know that people like fast cars, but it's nothing like the Formula One races (which I also don't get) where at least the cars go around several tricky and dangerous turns.

I'm not trying to get into an argument of superiority here. However, the way the rules are designed for American football, the athletes need protective gear. Anything with wheels
Basketball American "football" - FOOT means it's supposed to be played with your feet, not carried around like a grocery bag under your arm The occasional kick doesn't warrant calling it that. Cricket, but only cos I don't understand the rules yet - ANY sport with tea breaks is excellent otherwise Regular boxing but K1, Ultimate fighting etc. is GREAT

And I'm not saying rugby is not rough, not at all! I simply meant that athletes adjust to their situation. Rugby players know how to hit without pads, football players know how to hit with pads. In fact I think football player get a false sense of security from pads. I wonder if they might get fewer (serious) injuries if they learned to play without pads. They wouldn't hit as hard, just as you said. [Edited 7/12/08 11:38am] My Legacy

I never post here and had to for that quote. Have you ever heard of a little league called the NHL? I'm a diehard college football fan, but even I admit that it's (hockey) a "tougher" sport on the body, protective gear means nothing. And there are plenty of American's that play it... I imagine trying to play football or rugby or whatever on ice skates traveling 30 miles an hour down a rink while people are trying to check you into boards is a bit more intense than running with a rubber ball. And I happen to love ALL sports, so I'm not not putting any of them down. I'm just a girl with an opinion, though... "Down by the riverbank in the old bayou.. Someone boots it forward and then sprints full pace so the he hits the guy just as he takes the catch. The momentum if the hit is as hard as anything you'll see in gridiron....but with no girly pads... My favorite player being a RUSSIAN player, and I'm sure he'd get a chuckle out of someone calling him a yank & Richard The 1st wannabe. I suppose the fellow who had his throat SLASHED with the blade of a skate on television last season would enjoy your foolishness too. Have you ever played a sport? Most athletes respect other athletes and don't measure their "toughness" by putting other sports down. Just because you don't *like* something doesn't mean it's inferior. I think hockey is more intense than football or rugby... do I think they're (hockey players) the toughest men alive? No. But I apologize for trying to reason with a child, so I'll kindly slink back into oblivion. "Down by the riverbank in the old bayou.. I'm digging a grave into mud just for you."
