I'm a big fan of the original Wicker Man (1972), and until 2002 all soundtrack recordings of the movie were awful lifts directly from the final cut(s) of the film. It wasn't until 2002 that someone literally chanced upon the lone original master of the music, allowing for a full soundtrack to be released without truncated edits, sound effects, dialogue, etc. Even the studio hadn't seen this stuff in 30 years! Can you just imagine what other gems are floating out there in studio storage rooms and personal archives!?! You're right - it isn't uncommon, at all. In fact, a majority of early films have been lost, forgotten, irreparably damaged or destroyed (many simply for lack of preservation). The Metropolis find is huge. One can only hope that it will be put in good hands and lovingly restored and preserved. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Kinda funny that this footage would turn up in Argentina -- especially given that country's reputation for harboring Nazis. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

What!?! You've never seen a silent film!?! You're missing some good stuff, bruh!! No worries, though... The film has always been accompanied by various music soundtracks and, sometimes, dubbed sound effects. Take your pick of a version: http://www.geocities.com/...oroder.htm Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Fritz Lang did a lot of work for the fascists (which is what the Nazis were). We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That's crazy. Silent movies are great! And they all have musical accompaniment - it isn't a matter of no sound, at all. Some of my favorites: Wings (1927 - first film to win a Best Picture Oscar and Gary Cooper's first film. Also featured Clara Bow.) The Wind (1928 Saw this on the big screen with original Grand Barton accompaniment. Between the film and the music, most exhausting movie I've ever seen.) The Thief of Baghdad (1924 Douglas Fairbanks Sr. ) The Sheik (1921 Rudolph Valentino ) Blood and Sand (1922 Valentino again ) The Kid (1921 Charlie Chaplin) The Beloved Rogue (1927 John Barrymore ) Tempest (1928 John Barrymore) I could go on and on... i loooove metropolis, and i have an unexplored love for silent film in general.
when i was in high school, i got really bored one weekend and wired the stereo to our VCR so i could "re-score" the giorgio moroder version of "metropolis" onto a new tape. considering i was a 17-year-old with no professional editing equipment other than the best retail A/V components 1987 had to offer, the results weren't half bad! though some of the miscued songs were a little unintentionally hilarious. i need to dig that mess out for a party someday...

I dunno, I have had a HARD time getting into it. I always feel that it was worthy of a current adaption. I did like the anime re-interpretation that came out around 2002. Christian Zombie Vampires

Someone not going ape-shit about Metropolis? I have to agree. It's not high on my list of favorites. Visually it's interesting (German expressionism) but clunky and WAY too morally didactic.
