Darling, a lot of the students and teachers in my school are very religous so they digress their notes and homework for a mintue or two,and discuss their religion: Hinduism, Islam, and Chritianity. Christainity is a bit confusing and a bit fasinating.

Okay suby, here it goes. I'm only going to say this once.

The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the paschal mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation: it also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter

Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. There are no special provisions for cans of soda.

The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. There I would suggest that soda is out. Although don't quote me on that.

By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

If you ask me its a vast conspiracy to try and shut down the soda business.

You can't say this more than once?!! hm??

I believe Hindus also take out certain kind of foods during the season of fasting which lasts 1 or 2 weeks long!

Ramadan is easier. Wake up before sunrise, eat a good meal like eggs, rice, cereal, whatever. Pray Fajar. Go do whatever u like next. Around the prayers of Magrib, which is in the evening, eat again! simple!
Yet you have to continue this for 1 month.
Last year, I lost a bit of weight. I hope this year i can return to being really skinny again.

Whoa! Not so fast there Tonto! I don't want to get into a whole thing here, but Ramadan isn't exactly a walk in the park, you know. You make it sound like it's a wait in the Green Room before you debut on American Idol.

There's a little more to it than that.

Fasting in the month of Ramadan (Sawm in Arabic) is compulsory for every Muslim adult. The word sawm (plural siyam) literally means 'to refrain,' but as an Islamic term, it means refraining from food, drinks, and sexual activity from dawn to sunset.

Fasting is mandatory for every Muslim who is sane, adult, able and resident. The following exemptions apply:

  • The insane

  • Children who are not adolescent yet

  • The elderly and chronically ill for whom fasting is unreasonably strenuous; Such persons are required to feed at least one poor person every day in Ramadan for which he or she has missed fasting.

  • Pregnant women and nursing may postpone the fasting at a later time

  • The ill and the travellers can also defer their fasting.
Allah says in the Qur'an, Surah Al-Baqara:

'But if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period should be made up by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put you to difficulties.'

  • Women during the period of menstruation or of postchildbirth confinement. Fasting during these periods is forbidden and should be made up later, a day for a day.

Fasting starts everyday in Ramadan at the break of dawn, which is also the start of the Salatul Fajr time, and ends at sunset or with the call of Salatul Maghrib.

Give me Lent any day!

Now excuse me, it's Friday so I'm off to Long John Silver for dinner.

Ummm, well not exactly there, Scrappy Doo. You have it half right.

In the Hindu religion, fasting is commonly practiced on New Moon days and during festivals such as Shivaratri, Saraswati Puja, and Durga Puja (also known as Navaratri). Women in North India also fast on the day of Karva Chauth.

But how they fast depends on the individual. Fasting may involve 24 hours of complete abstinence from any food or drink, but is more often an elimination of solid foods, with an occasional drink of milk or water.

I wonder if there are any religions out there that demand that you drink a can of soda a day? confused

When I was in Morocco I tried to fast for Ramadan and Ramadan washed the floor with me. I lasted two days and then my stomach rebelled after futor and it was not pretty. I have a ton of admiration and respect for that holiday and all who take part in it.

Since I get up early for the fasting process, ITV(indian television) shows a great program for all the Muslims. They have not only Imams reading and telling us info, but the other day they showed a woman who has a b.a.,m.a,ph.d and some other degree on Philsopy, English and the comparisons of analatic(sp?) procedures discuss Islam. How did she get the job?!!!

My favortie portion is the foreign part of the show. So far, this Arabic looking man sings so beautifully with an Indonesian Woman and a chorus of Indonesian children. Not only is the song lovely, the direction and the cinematogorphy(sp?) is amazing. Last year, they did Turkey broadcasting.

My least favorite part is when the man is calling for prayer. The man's tone was awful and it lasts so long.
