Cabbage is pretty cheap and can be versatile. One of my favorites is cumin fried cabbage. This is the time of the year I collect the fallen cabbages along the side of the highway each day as I travel back and forth to work. I cook them and freeze them. Roadkill cabbage is awesome!

I also make all of our bread. I do a bit of bulk cooking and freeze a lot. I make a lot of dry bulk mixes that can be used as needed-- stuff like waffle/pancake mix, soup mixes, thing like that. All I have to do is add the wet ingredients and cook and it's as convenient as instant, but much healthier and cheaper.

I make our laundry soap for very little money. It's much cheaper than even the cheapest store bought.

I plan to do a lot of canning this summer. Not only vegetables, but some soups and stews.

Frozen vegetables are pretty cheap and versatile.

Competitive goat riding. There's an event the Olympics committee should be considering. Especially if they can get them to go 65ish miles per hour!

1. keep plenty of pasta, rice, and grains around

2. learn how to make basic red and white sauces from scratch, they're easy and cost pennies to make.

3. make chicken and vegetable boullion your best friend. they hide a multitude of sins.

4. keep your freezer stocked with assorted bags of frozen veggies and frozen fish to be pulled out in a moment's notice. i always keep portioned bags of broccoli, cauliflower, chopped spinach, and haricort verts in my freezer. also when you buy fresh fish and veggies you portion them off and freeze whatver you don't need soon in a ziplock.

5. Introduce the family to herbal tea to drink instead of cold soda. To make 2 quarts just brew a couple of bags and sweeten it, stick it in the fridge before you go to bed.

6. Keep the pantry stocked with endless cans of tomatoes (whole and crushed), and also keep mushrooms and assorted cans of beans on hand. Beans are excellent for making a quick and hearty homemade soup, or after flipping them in a pan with a little olive oil and seasoning, sprinkled across a full size salad

Also be sure to heck out the "quick and easy" section of Yahoo! Food on a regular basis...they have a ton of excellent suggestions for affordable meals. I think you can have them deliver recipes daily or weekly to your email inbox.

there is a dish I could feed the whole family on lol it is cheap on the extreme cheap side

1 packet chicken noodle soup (low salt) - on that makes up 1 litre
1 tin creamed corn
1-2 eggs whisked

Cook up soup, mix creamed corn, bring to boil and dribble in the eggs while stirring the pot rapidly with a fork

feeds 4ish
for about $2

you can add some shredded chicken meat and add spring onions and a dash of worcestershire sauce drool

I'd suggest start a garden, but you have to consider your water bill and where you live. Here in the desert, water gets expensive.
If there's any lakes or other bodies of water, you could take up fishing. biggrin
