Interesting, I didn't hear it that way at all. Sounded like she was struggling with how to feel about a number of things and asked the question "is that karma?" in regards to the earthquake. Then seeing how the mistreated people still wanted to help out the people mistreating them it taught her a lesson. But that's just me
