Baby Eagles Attacked and Saved by Live Cam

Check this out! My daughter and I have been spending a lot of time the last couple of weeks watching these baby eagles on the island of Santa Cruz, a part of the Channel Islands off of the coast of Ventura County, CA. (The video streams through a media player, like windows and is an impressive picture for a live stream in the wilderness). The Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) has been working on repopulating the islands with eagles for the past few years and has been quite successful.

We have grown quite attached to them. It is amazing watching them grow...having their parents feed them...and them learning to eat on their own. And at night when it gets dark...U only hear the crickets...it is so peaceful. Well...with the good there is always some bad...and on Monday...the babies were attacked by a rogue juvenille eagle. We watched the entire set events live...and it was harrowing! Due to someone else who was also watching, the eagles were saved as she called a friend from the eagle forum...who had the number to the IWS crew on the island saved in her cell phone. Synchronicity in action!

Here is the news story from the NBC affiliate in LA. (There is also a story on the MSN homepage) As I said we watched the entire thing play out. Below is a link for the news video...and another link for YouTube which has a condensed 8 minute video of the close to 2 hour encounter. Check out the eagle cam and the Channel Islands Live with the last link. Enjoy this amazing story!

Haystack

Isn't the whole point of watching the nest to see nature happening as it's intended? Not for man to immediately interfere when something happens that the obviously sensitive viewers may not like?

God forbid they should ever have 'Spider Web Cam'.

Can you imagine the calls when those poor flies find themselves trapped in the web of that nasty spider? How dare the spider follow its instinct when it goes against all human morals? rolleyes

Last year, on the BBC's Springwatch programme, a webcam was placed in a nest of baby owls to watch their first days on earth and the biggest baby owl ended up eating it's own siblings. It was nature. It was how baby owls are. Nobody complained and nobody stopped them because that's just how it is. Oddly, animals are different from humans. Shame viewers of this eagle webcam didn't realise that.

Haystack...I totally see your point and in most instances would totally agree with U. I understand the circle of life, as does my daughter. The difference here, in terms of human "interference", is that this is a delicate population that is being restored because it was decimated by humans in the first place. (See: DDT) So sometimes...human "interference" is indeed needed and is not the result of "sensitive viewers"...but of a common interest to rehabilitate and preserve what we as humans too often have carelessly destroyed.
