Diet soda does not make you fat. There is no possible way that just by drinking diet soda you can gain weight. There are no calories in diet soft drinks, therefore, scientifically, it is impossible to gain weight from it.

BUT

Diet soda or anything with caffeine tends to kickstart your appetite.

interesting correlation: 85% of all diet soda drinkers are fat... thats a reflection of the consumer base, not the products effect.

confused

Aspartame: inhibits seratonin, creating false feeling of hunger and causing mild depression
Phenylalanine: may cause cancer
Caffeine: dilates kidneys (makes you pee), flushing needed water and nutrients, causes hypertension
Carbon Dioxide: pulls needed calcium out of the body
High fructose corn syrup: causes obesity and diabetes
Sodium: causes hypertension

Aspartame causes a whole list of side effects.
I have never known anyone to lose weight drinking diet sodas.

Everyone I know that drinks diet sodas complain about always being hungry and thirsty.
Why not just drink water if you are trying to lose weight?

nod drinking water is the best. and eating raw fruits and vegetables. If you don't like the taste of just plain old water, they make plenty of waters that are fruity flavored. Or drink some green tea...but water is the best to drink to lose weight.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Indeed or you can just add a bit of fresh lemon or lime to your water.

I'm of the completely non-scientific opinion that everything is OK in moderation. I drink diet soft drinks a few times a week. Why? Because I have to seriously, seriously watch my calorie intake. I gain weight just by looking at food. I drink lots and lots and lots of water. But sometimes I want something with a little flavor, so I grab a diet soda or make a pitcher of crystal light. I drink the caffeine-free ones, though, as I'm super caffeine sensitive.

And caffeine is actually an appetite-suppressant. Caffeine has been a main ingredient in diet pills for a looooong time. Aspartame may be what causes you to feel hungry. Kind of like gum. Your body is getting ready to process calories cause you're consuming something but since there's nothing there to turn into energy, you want more.

As for the question of it "really working", I've seen people lose weight simply from switching from sugared to sugar-free sodas. If you're someone who's drinking sodas every day, sometimes several a day, it will make a significant difference over the course of a week, let alone a couple of months.

I think the point of those who rally against them is neither is really "healthy". Of course you're better off with water. But if you're looking purely at a calorie-intake, yes, it is far fewer calories and it's a quick and fairly easy change to make on your way to weight loss.

I drink 1 can of diet Coke every morning (I don't drink coffee). I usually don't drink it on the weekends, but occasionally I will. I know it has all sorts of chemical that are bad for me but fuck it. I live in NYC where I could easily get hit by a bus, murdered, have a building collapse on me, or any number of other dangers. I figure if I'm meant to die from diet Coke intake, then that's the way it goes; no use stressing about it. I don't smoke, do drugs, or eat fast food, and I walk a lot so I figure I'm entitled this vice. shrug

I am also in the 15% of diet soda drinker who are not fat. I know I have very poor eating habits (read: I skip breakfast & lunch---long story) so within the last 2 years I have dropped two sizes (and I wasn't overweight before either).

Why anyone would ingest Aspartame, I will never figure out.

It's made up of multiple toxins that when combined supposedly are "safe enough" to consume falloff

The labels on the back of the boxes of these sweetners state that you should store in a a cool, dry, place. This is because heat and humidity causes aspertame's contents to become a bit unstable. Now, the last time I checked the human body is 98 degrees of a wet, hot, soupy mess. Yeah, aspertame will do REAL well drifting around in your bloodstream.

I mean, if you're someone who is concerned enough to be driven to drink diet sodas, just drink water for goodness sakes. Or make your own lemonade or something when you're at home and drink that in moderation.

For most people it's not about choosing the smarter 'junk food', it's about their addiction to sweets in the first place. It astounds me when I look around at work at the guys trying to loose weight and ingest pure, synthetic garbage into their bodies. Weighing less doesn't make them healthy. shrug

And yet we're told time and time and time and time again that weighing less makes us healthy. Of COURSE people think weighing less is healthier. lol For people who are obese a diet soda in the grand scheme of things isn't that bad.
Now, I know exactly what you're talking about, I'm not saying I don't. Americans consume crap that isn't good for us all the time. It just brings me back to my moderation thing. Too much of anything is bad for you.

Weight less with junk in our bodies is healthier than weighting more with junk in our bodies.

I'm just saying, ultimately, why put junk in our bodies at all?

Aspertame? That's nastttaaaaay.

Honestly, I'd probably support smoking before I supported Aspertame use. At least with smoking, we know what all the risks are. lol

Actually, the sizes are closer together than they used to be, I've found. I think it depends on the store/label/etc. Last time I shopped there I was buying the same sizes I was at home.

I agree with you Dan. I have never forced myself to drink diet sodas. Moderation is key. If I feel like I need sugar I consume a little sugar then the craving goes away.
No one that I know that consumes diet sodas actually lose weight. Usually they feel hungry and thirsty the more that they drink that nasty tasting diet stuff.

HANSEN'S diet sodas - lots of flavors, taste great, no aspartame. They use sucralose instead which is still questionable but I don't believe there are any solid links to cancer like w/ aspartame. As much as I LOVE Diet Vanilla Coke, I stay the fuck away from it...
