What is the BIOLOGICAL reason Asian Elephants are so large? ~confuse~ !!!! I don't get it.
Growing large is often advantageous for arid regions in which animals must traverse long distances between watering holes and maintain a constant body temperature, etc. etc. So I can see why African Elephants are so large. But Asian Elephants in general roam through jungles. Albeit are quite a bit smaller than their African counterparts--an adaptive trait through requirement I'm sure, they are still much larger and bulkier than say... a hippo or a rhino. I guess through natural selection, perhaps in thousands or a million years, they'll be smaller still. Or extinct. What is the biological reason that necessitates this size? It makes no sense. If that were the case, everybody in the red states would stand 8 foot tall.

[Edited 4/24/08 8:16am] I guess they didn't get the evolution memo. Oh I'm NOT saying evolution doesn't exist. We've adapted dogs through natural selection from 7 main families into over 200 breeds in just a couple thousand years. In the last hundred, there dozens and dozens of new breeds have been created. But we controlled the traits there. We chose the traits we liked and bred them accordingly. In the wild, natural selection favors adaptation to the environment. So the large size is there for a reason. But in the jungle I can't figure out what that would even be. . [Edited 4/24/08 8:28am]
