Hey, if Anthony Hopkins can play a black man in The Human Stain, then I guess anything's possible lol .

I think she can take some cues from Dave playing the blind white supremacist. He was too believable! cool

Did anyone ever see this one? I actually never heard of it. Was it ever finished?

Halle's a White Woman

Oscar winner Halle Berry's not just playing a teacher, she's playing a white teacher. The switcheroo casting move will find the actress in the fact-based drama Class Act, about a white sixth-grade Nevada teacher named Tierney Cahill , who made a deal with her students that she would run for Congress in 2000 if they would help run her campaign.

Single mom Cahill lost in the election but managed to nab 35 percent of the popular vote against the incumbent candidate. Akeelah and the Bee writer Doug Atchison will write and direct the inspirational story.

New mom Halle Berry is set to play a double role in her next movie, and one of them will see her playing a racist Caucasian woman. Berry will star in and produce Frankie and Alice, in which she'll play both titular roles as a woman who's dealing with multiple personality disorder. One of the personalities is the racist Caucasian alter ego who battles her real personality for control of her mind. No start date has been set for the production, which is the Oscar winner's first new project announced since she gave birth to daughter Nahla in March …

Yeah, I heard about this as well. Some of the folks I was with were making a big deal about the fact that Halle, being black, was playing a white woman. I asked what's the difference between that and the beloved Jolie, being white, when she played a black woman? Then there was a brief silence and then I said "Uh huh...that's what I thought.".

The thing is that in that movie she made, Angelina Jolie really looked a bit like the woman she played, and keep in mind that that woman she played is very lightskinned. Halle Berry on the other hand is also lightskinned but doesn´t really look caucasian, in my opinion. At least that´s the way I see it, as a non-american...but of course there might be more behind it and maybe you are making a valid point but, as I said, it works one way but not the other way around. Angelina Jolie could also play a Latina or Middle Eastern woman, her look is pretty versatile, IMO, especially when she changes the color or texture of her hair.
I´m looking at this from a totally non-political perspective here, just judging by the looks of both actresses.

Yeah, I still cringe every time I watch that film because of that. I love most of the other parts of that film, but I cannot in good conscience recommend it to people because of the Mr. Yunioshi character.

I thought that too, except wouldn't this be a bit different because Halle's biological mother is caucasian/white anyway, right? (As opposed to Jolie who has no black parents.)

Well as the cat who wrote the thread explained to me; Halle's playing a black in the film, but because of her split personality, she thinks she's somebody else, who just happens to be white. And yeah, I know Halle's mother is white but ask Halle what does she considers herself to be and she'll say "Black". Her words.

I know Halle down plays her white side but if it wasn't for her white side she wouldn't exist.

Well according to Halle, her mother was the one who suggested she identify as black, because that is how ppl were going to view her

lmao @ mj

the mj and halle mix is kind of attractive to be honest. It shows that he would look decent if he was able to tan today, although nothing like before

It didn't really surprise me cause I already knew she's half white.

I'm half white and I identify as Asian.

It's largely because that's how I AM viewed. I'm tan, black hair, and have relatively Asian features--moreso than white. So I don't get treated as white. Thus, I identify as Asian. I'm comfortable with this identification though I do understand that I'm mixed. It's not a confusing thing for me, and I see where Halle is coming from in her identification.

So do I. It's actually a really interesting thing that I hear from a lot of mixed ppl (or rather those mixed with white and something else). Deep down they don't actually choose to be one or the other because they can't, but they usually identify with the non-white race because that is how ppl view them. I'm not sure how someone who is mixed could not identify more with one race, especially when ppl treat you a certain way based on the way you look. I can see how it may be difficult to deal with, especially early in life, but it's definitely difficult to fully identify with both because of the outside forces.

YES!!!

falloff

It blew my mind they called me farang, considering a lot of the Thais there were more pale than I was. It was like they were trying to look as pasty and white (I don't mean Caucasians are pasty and white...but asians when they try to 'whiten' look pasty) as possible. So I found it odd they called me that.

But then again, my features are a little bit confusing to a pure Thai. And I'm tall, a bit hairy, etc. etc. The fact that below the waste I'm all black if you know what I mean, seems to confuse folks even more. shrug

lol It's funny isn't it? I see Chinese Thais paler than me and I'm mostly of Scandinavian descent. lol You get dark reddish brown skinned Thais, dark brown, very pale Chinese, yellowish Chinese Thais, and even half Thai half Europeans who don't get the 'farang' label, yet you get labelled a farang straight away. It must be your fanny pack or something. lol It's not even about money or actual facial features either. I mean, you can see an obviously rich Chinese person pale as a sheet and they look absolutely nothing like a Thai from Issan or somewhere like Hat Yai, and have a completely different lifestyle that's alien to the average Thai, yet you being more Thai (and looking more so) are called farang. lol

As a non-Asian it depends how dark you are though. Most western Europeans are farang, but if say you're from Turkey and darker skinned the farang term no longer applies. If you're middle eastern or Indian a worse word is used and all black people are called either 'khon dum' (black person) or negro regardless of where they're from. As for me, I went to get my hair cut one time when I had a tan and my beard was long and they thought I was Moroccan. confuse lol

Were you even referred to as 'luuk khrung' (half child)?

I should also add that I once knew a guy here called Nathan who was half Korean and half Thai but simply raised in the US and he was considered farang too. lol

Not to mention, don't they remember when she played the lead in the Alex Haley mini-series "QUEEN"? She played title role of Haley's grandmother, who being a product of a slave-slavemaster conception, passed for white for most of her life. They filtered and flooded the hell out those lights during that filming and Halle did indeed pass for white just fine, at least for the viewer to willingly suspend disbelief...and this was over 15 years ago. They need to stop tripping.

They used make-up to make her look white

The intimate portrait I saw on Halle over a decade ago she she clearly said that she identifies as a black woman because that's what she sees when she looks in the mirror. Those are the words she wpoke from her own mouth. Sounds reasonable enough to me.

Obviously, and..? confuse

....all I'm saying, is how they light her in the film to blow her complexion out is a huge part of how she'll be able look convincing as a caucasian woman. I never suggested that they didn't pancake and powder her to high hell. That's a given, as far as I'm concerned. wink

I agree. I thought Jolie resembled the woman she was playing. It was her right to play the part anyways because she was the one who got the film made. It was her idea to make a movie about this lady in the first place. But yeah, Jolie does have features that can transfer well playing other races.
