What could it mean if I see a big black ball in my peripheral vision

and there is no black ball there? confused confused confused

Did I just drink too much caffeine or should I seriously be worried my eye is going to explode or something?

Don't be scared. My boss was telling me the other day that a friend had a detached retina that only got worse because he didn't seek treatment for it right away.

No, not necessarily. My retina was detaching and it was caught in a routine eye exam. I had to go to a opthalmologist for some minor laser surgery to reinforce the retina to prevent detachment. No worries. comfort I didn't have any warning or symptoms, so yes, RUN to the eye doctor to find out what's up.

Richard...yes go see an eye doctor ASAP. My sister in law got a detached retina and it does cause permanent damage. I'm not saying that's what you have, but only a professional can tell you that.

Your vision isn't something to mess around with. If you lose it your screwed.

i'm always a jackass, but i'm being serious. it sounds like a blind spot, like what they talk about in driver's ed class. you should get it checked out, but it may not be anything terribly unusual or abnormal.

No, he has two.

HOWEVER, unless you're standing front of him, you can only see one at a time--hence the peripheral vision seeing one. Its kind of like trying to see two planets, side by side while one is closer to you than the other.

And I use planets appropriately here, if you know what I mean.

Go see a doctor as soon as you can. It sounds like a hole or a detatched retina. No it doesn't hurt, just distorts your vision. If you start to see any other signs like flashing lights or "lightning" in your eye, or it starts to look like a curtain coming over one side then call the eye doctor immediately.
They will run a series of tests to see exactly what's going on.

I've had both a macular hole and a detatched retina and have had 3 vitrectomies and 2 laser surgeries on my right eye.
Get it looked at soon, time is of the essence. rose

Go to the doc right away. Ask about ischemic optic neuropathy.

Not joking a bit.
