Not to say there isn't bits of that in NYC here and there, but it's not as prevalent in my (admittedly limited) experience. I love the fakeness of L.A., it's all a big show.....and the show must go on! I truely enjoyed that when I was there last year (so were you! ).....I really kind of miss it! but that was about me!

Dig a little deeper and like anywhere else you will find fantastic people. I don't think LA is soul-less. I think there is a LOT of that there, but there's heart to be found if you dig deep enough, as you said. And there are parts I have enjoyed very much. Overall, though, it's just not me. Which is what I meant by it coming down to personal preference. |

Fot the purposes of travel though i think we would both agree that it takes a lot of money and time to do it right out here. Its very spread out. Aksel was pointing out Vegas ( 3 1/2 hours) Sanfrancsco ( 8 hours) SanDiego (2) Mexico (right behind San Diego) So, if you have time, money and arent afraid to rent a car and drive the universe its amazing. NY on the other hand has very affordable transportation and everything is at your fingertips.

Wow some of you are getting heated!!! Both places are great but so so different and it depends what you're into.
I like the oldness of New York, the subway, the food, the diversity, the Hamptons!!!! Um there's a beach there HELLOOOO!!! Plus you're not far from New England and Cape Cod. Both places have their plus and minuses, I love to visit LA, just couldn't live there.

If you are visiting, I have to say NYC. Otherwise you're going to have to rent a car. Also NYC has more to see in terms of museums and historical buildings.
However if you want to see Celebrities, LA is your best bet. Christian Zombie Vampires

Plus in L.A. you can always do porn to make ends meet and afford the car. Each has it's benefits. Christian Zombie Vampires

If you like cocaine, you can't get it cheaper than in L.A.--plus alot of porn companies will let you work for cocaine unofficially of course. Though I'd prefer NYC because it's a walking town and has a subway, L.A.'s weather is superior. Plus, you can earn cocaine through porn. To Sir, with Love

Too me, they both require a lot of money to fully appreciate.
The big difference is layout, though. In LA you need a car, and an invitation to a cool party/in bar. IN NYC, you can just walk around & find stuff. The down side to NYC is you'll feel packed in by people. LA has some elbow room. My Legacy

San Francisco is a good compromise, a mix of east coast/west coast, and a great city to visit.
I would recommend SF over LA, unless you're specifically interested in entertainment. [Edited 4/14/08 12:17pm] My Legacy

I prefer New York over L.A..
Cali is beautiful though.. I love the energy in New York--particularly around Christmas! I love Austin, though.

I prefer NY, despite the shit winter weather & insanely expensive apartments... LA is completely vapid (unless all you care about in the entire world is the entertainment industry, celeb gawking, more celeb gawking @ clubs, & being surrounded by folks who desperately want into the industry) but the weather is great, apartments are cheaper (& probably easier to find??). You do need a car though, as mentioned. Depends on why you're going & what you're looking for...

In your situation purplesweat, I would say NYC. While both are great, have a lot of things to do & are hella expensive, you don't need a car here in NYC. The Buses and the Subways run 24/7/365, so you are covered there and as others have said, you can walk to a lot of places here. L.A. is a place where you MUST drive. PERIOD. If you do come to NYC, your best bet is to live in the outer boroughs (outside of Manhattan). It's all expensive but not like Manhattan. Good luck in deciding where to go and holla at me if you come to NYC! [Edited 4/14/08 12:31pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Maybe, in SF itself. But it's a small city. Sort of like Manhattan or Beverly Hills/Santa Monica. You can live in Brooklyn, Oakland, the Valley. but you could be right, SF could be a bit more.
