Dear Friends,

My mother is having major surgery this morning.

She has kidney failure and is waiting to, hopefully, one day receive a donor kidney, though today's surgery is for another, unrelated, matter - but her status as both a diabetic and dialysis patient, with all the accompanying ramifications of those conditions, makes undergoing any surgery a bit more complicated.

She is an extremely brave woman and is not frightened by the prospect of today's operation; in fact, it is I who is a bundle of nerves. Please, if you could, it would mean a great deal to me to know prayers and good thoughts are going out to her, that she shall have a successful surgery and an uneventful and swift recovery.

Update, 10 April PM: I spoke to my father yesterday evening. My mother had been taken into surgery at a later time than originally scheduled, which explained why by late afternoon I'd still not heard any news, and why no one I spoke with on the hospital floor could tell me anything as to her status. However, at the time I finally heard from my pops, she was in her hospital room and, though quite groggy, as comfortable as possible.

Today, however, was a rather difficult day for her -- her pain was quite bad, and so she had to be given a stronger painkiller. She was also terribly exhausted as she literally did not sleep at all last night because her blood sugars, according to the nurse, were 'out of control', which necessitated an insulin drip being started and her blood being drawn and checked every hour. She finally was able to rest mid-afternoon today.

The good news is that her pain now seems to be better managed, and as of this evening, her blood sugar is back into normal range. Hopefully tonight she can sleep.

Thanks again to all for the prayers, the good thoughts, and the comfort and support which you've graciously given. You've made a difference, please know that.

I've found through all of the surgeries and treatments I've had over my life that it's always the people around that are the most nervous and emotional, and usually not me (or the person undergoing it). She will be fine, you'll see
