But yeah, it did scream out for attention.
They do it for shock value...the same reason actors and even artists do oddball things to get attetion and the reason why many of them end up on the covers of tabloids. Shocking things automatically get people's attention. Who isn't going to stop and stare at a gruesome car accident? Attention-seeking is pretty much the principle basis behind Muenchuesen (sp?) Syndrome. Why would you harm your own child just so you can get attention and sympathy? Who isn't going to look at two girls making out and feeling each other up? Hell, I'd look because I'd be making a mental memo, "Note to self: Never do that shit in public unless you want to be raped or arrested...CHECK". I don't want some nasty-ass mofo hittin' on me thinking I'm a hooker. Personally, I just don't get it at all.  It's the same thing and it's extremely disturbing to in all areas. The majority of the human race loves attention. Vanity will be one of our downfalls. I believe it stems from what someone's childhood was like, but that's just me. It's funny how people have trouble excepting change. Watching the news soo much last year (because I don't have real cable ) has showed me how people don't seem to believe that people or things can change. Britney Spears is the prime example. She went from All-American girl next door to  ..that's how I'll describe her uh....um situation. People can change, from good to bad and vise-versa. It's kinda part of life. If you remained the same person you were when you were 10, than you're probably crazy. Angelina just grew out of that phase and grew up. I think her mother's passing had a huge effect on her. She was soo young when she passed..only in her 50's and they were close. 
She even openly admitted that when she was single she had friends with benefits...just go to a hotel and hook up with one of her FWBs and then go about her day after they were done. It's like dating without the committment. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with that, but that's just me. Now, she's trying to save the world and is re-telling the Josephine Baker story by adopting children from different countries. Ms. Baker did it before her, so I don't see why people find it so odd.
