Wakes are a tradition stemming from the times before advanced medicine, when someone in - say a coma - could possibly "wake" from the dead. The few wakes that I have been to were filled with people recounting memories of the person's life and so on...and because this person is recently deceased, it is a very emotional occasion filled with anguish and grief. I has the displeasure of attending my first Jewish ceremony last week. Since the person had just passed in the 24hrs previous, the pain was still fresh and even though I had only known her from work, I had tears flowing down my face when the husband and sons recounted their love for her. I cannot see how it could be humanly possible to turn such an event into a festive celebration.
As a Hispanic, I can pretty much find an excuse to throw a party and dance to just about any occasion...but a wake is just not one of them. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! | |
