Ok who has seen it?

The old one in German or the new one....don't matter it's basicly shot for shot the same film.

Who here, besides me, was sick enough to put themselves through this experience? Better yet, who here, besides me, actually enjoyed it?


The whole controversy of it all roped me in big time. And even though this movie fucked with my dreams a few nights in a row.... I really wanna see it again.

What the hell does that say about me?

Oh well, can't say I would recommend it to anyone, but if you were sick enough to sit through it on your own. Let's chat.

The director said something like ... "If you choose not to see it or if you walk out of this movie, you didn't need it. If you sit through it, you did."

I have a foggy idea of what that means, but I like that the film makes you think about violent media, and why we watch it. The message behind t is a bit pretentious, but still maybe worth thinking/talking about.

I saw it on cable a few years ago (either on IFC or Sundance). I'm NOT a fan of torture porn films so I don't even remember why I watched it. Afterward I felt scarred--the same way I felt after seeing Se7en and Requiem For A Dream.

I have the latter on DVD.

Se7en didn't bother me at all, Requiem gave me the willys....but this movie topped almost everything I've ever seen. I spit on your grave is the scariest movie I ever saw. I don't think anything can top that. That movie scarred me for life.

As for torture porn.... I like my violence candy colored like Kill Bill or A Clockwork Orange... I was kinda expecting something more like that.

Rich likes the original but I haven't seen it yet.

I've read that the boys break the fourth wall with more frequency in the original. I'd like to see how that would play, because in the new version it just doesn't work.

I think what was similar about all three movies for me was the feeling of despair I felt as the movie was ending. I don't recall feeling like that after watching any other bleak films.

A Clockwork Orange I really like. That film is different to me. Maybe it's because the social commentary was much more obvious. When I first saw Funny Games, I thought it was just a sick movie. I didn't know anything about the message behind it.

A Clockwork Orange IS different then other "ultraviolent" movies because of, yes, the social commentary, but at the end of A Clockwork Orange, you feel elated because well...because Alex is, and because he was for a brief time reabilitated, the viewer sees him as a human, not a monster.
He's more than a cardboard cut out bad guy. that's the beauty of that film and novel.


I didn't feel the dispair at the end of Funny Games, because it ended wit a silly horror movie "GOTCHA!" type shot. But I felt that with Requiem....big time. Like maybe just maybe...the director wanted to injure the audience a bit with the film. For some reason I felt that at the end of Cube as well.


I think Haneke wants to do the same, and I think he wants us to think he's righteous for doing so.

Maybe the same scene was there and I just don't remember it. I'm getting old.

I remember seeing Cube on cable years ago also (on probably the same indie movie channel). That movie was twisted too, yes, but it didn't affect me as much as the other films.

is it worse than 'irreversible'?

if not, i can probably deal with it.

when i saw the previews for this i thought, "oh great, another movie about a nice normal suburban family getting tortured by weirdo freaks (read: subculture types or "sexual deviants") - so there's something more to this flick that i should be giving a chance?

But the audience is far from limited to horror fans.

It's just these two basicly unidentified boys tourturing this nice litte rich white family. The torture is mostly psychological, and there is violence but it happens mostly off camera.
