lol "every child is NOT special...they're fucking goofy looking!" falloff

Fricking genius.

It may be blasphemy, but might be my pick for the greatest comedian ever. That's no knock at Richard Pryor, but Carlin's longevity is tough to top. He never abandoned his standup for (often bad) movies or TV like all the other greats did, it seems.

Good thread Aud. It's ironic, but I JUST got through posting about my love of Richard Pyror. Richard and Carlin were both big back in the 70's. Of course the pairing of the two in the masterpiece film "Car Wash" was huge. George definately has a unique take on things and his delivery and timing is flawless. Unlike Pryor, Carlin has managed to weather on through the storms. And God bless him.

Carlin is just like my other favorite comedian Paul Mooney. Regardless of what race, religion, or creed, they will call you out on your bullshit. This is what real comedy is all about. Bringing the real & the funny. The truth hurts but it shall set you free.

yes, and lord knows he lived hard (maybe not as hard as Pryor, but still)

Well I think some people are just meant to live longer than others. U know? That's what I've always believed. I mean, look at musicians. Look at The Stones. Keith and Mick, Eric Clapton, just to name a few, all did their share of hard living. But then look at the 3 J's; Jimi, Jim and Janis. Let's stick with comedians. Take Robin Williams, who has had his fun when it came to substances. But then look at Belushi. God gives us all free will so although we can choose what hand we want to play, we don't know what card we will be dealt.

Thanks.

They both managed to get below the surface of everyday subjects in their own uniquely humorous ways.

I love George! I've been a fan since the 70's and I've seen him twice live. He's always so honest with his comedy. I feel the same way about Chris Rock. They make me laugh my ass off while speaking the truth!!

A signature of all the better humorists (Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Lily Tomlin, Lenny Bruce, etc.).
But this combination of intelligence & truth (especially the truth component) also tends to make people uncomfortable.

Bill Cosby's genius is sometimes forgotten because of his sitcom celeb status.

But I've always loved his older stuff, Bill Cosby Himself, and recently I saw a new show of his. On the outside it's boring, rambling, long, old man stories, but after about ten minutes into one story I was practically crying.

Yeah, he's showing his age lately but still has flashes of brilliance.
Especially these days when he's just speaking on subjects out of comedy mode.

Does the "new show" have a name or was it just a random performance?

woot! Carlin!

Personally I prefer his older, stoner humour ( you're HIGH on the plane falloff ) to his more recent, grumpy-old-man, shtick. But when you get right down to it, all of Carlin's stuff is just fucking genius.

I watched the whole special on YouTube & liked it. I think it was a bit short though, & George Carlin keeps going off on long tangents before getting his point across! The jokes weren't as funny on this special, but still pretty good. I heart George Carlin. thumbs up!

I can't remember, but it was on TV about three years ago.

In the Jerry Seinfeld movie Comedian, Chris Rock was talking to him about that performance (or the tour that Cosby was doing at the time) describing it as the best show he'd ever seen.

I know some of that is the joy of seeing an idol, but I do remember thinking it was simultaneously dull & hilarious

Yesterday, on Youtube I watched George Carlin's whole 1988 special "What Am I Doing In New Jersey?" & then I watched parts of the rest of his HBO specials up 2 now. I noticed a lot of things that changed about him or his shows. hmmm He started wearing a ponytail in '89/'90 & after his '92 show, he started talking about more serious topics instead of all dirty jokes & slapstick comedy. George Carlin's voice started 2 get more nasal-sounding after '96. He's Irish, but since the '80s his voice has sounded a bit Italian. George Carlin got less skinny & more beefy around '05, but I think he's lost a little weight now. The whole theme of his 2005 HBO special was suicide! confused I like George Carlin, but sometimes that one makes me think he needs therapy or something. neutral Maybe it was just the drugs he was on then. blunt

It's interesting to see the image he had when he started...

...a straight suit & tie wearing conventional comic.

This segment of his Inside The Actors Studio appearance...

...explains his metamorphosis and the comedic artists that influenced him.

I had tickets for this, but couldn't go. I've performed countless times on that stage with my old dance troupe when I was a teen. We get discount tickets through the box office for being 'alumni' members of Marietta's.

More and more HBO specials are being filmed at this center.
