I fully expect this thread to flop , but something an orger just posted struck my geeky imagination ...

On his recent http://prince.org/msg/100/262132 thread, Christopher joked (I hope it was a joke) that: "I would hump that plate if it was near me!" This intrigued me, because I've also heard people mention wanting to "make love to" a particularly beautiful car or room. And I've heard people say that something appealing -- like a song or shoe or electronic gadget -- is "pure sex." Also, when something is really exciting, people often talk about it in orgasmic terms. Sigmund Freud, of course, thought that sexuality was our most central human drive and that sexual hangups at certain times in our lives pan out to bigger problems later.

On the other hand, it's not uncommon to talk about wanting to "devour" an object of affection, or hearing "I could just bite" someone/something attractive. And if you think about the things we do with our mouths to loved ones -- nibbling, biting, kissing, licking, etc. -- it could be argued that much of our activity around affection/love/sex has consumption as its template.

Am I nuts, or am I onto something? And if these drives are somehow related, which do you think is the more central -- sexuality or eating?

For me? Eating.

Though if I could ever find myself a steady boyfriend, it's likely I'd lose 20 pounds with a quickness.

I eat more often than I am having sex. But when I want to have sex the feeling is much stronger than when I am hungry.

Libido trumps appetite every time.

Well, sex and food are two of the six basic drives that keeps humans (and all other mammals) alive as a species. The others are sleep, fighting, running away, and defending personal territory (a.k.a., shelter). We have to eat and drink to survive on a basic level, we have to build a shelter to protect us from the elements and other threats, and we have to sleep. While we don't have to physically fight people anymore (for the most part), those basic instincts can still be seen in a person's competitive drive to excel in a given profession or vocation and let everyone know about it. And while most of us don't have to worry about being attacked by a pride of lions and becoming their dinner or devoured by a pack of wolves or school of sharks, we still have to be aware of danger to ourselves (e.g., don't hang around a gang-infested neighborhood late at night if we can help it, run from a crazed axe-wielding murder, etc.). And of course, our sex drives are the mechanism for us humans to mate and preserve the human species.
