Scan spots women faking orgasms

By Michelle Roberts

BBC News health reporter in Copenhagen

Tell tale brain activity in a fake orgasm

A simple brain scan can spot whether a woman is faking an orgasm or not, a major fertility conference has heard.

Researchers found that when a woman is faking, a part of the brain under conscious control lights up, while real orgasms occur subconsciously.

The University of Groningen scans also showed important differences between the male and female orgasm.

In women, turning off fear and anxiety is key, while men need to know they will be physically stimulated.

Professor Gert Holstege and colleagues asked 13 heterosexual couples aged 19-49 to take part in an experiment.

Women can imitate orgasm quite well

Professor Gert Holstege

One half of the couple was asked to lie down, with their head inside a scanner, while their partner stimulated them manually to achieve orgasm.

To aid the mood, the room lighting was dimmed and all noise distractions shut out.

The couples then switched positions and the experiment was repeated.

Cold feet

One thing that they found was putting the couples off the task was literally cold feet.

When they gave the couples socks to wear, about 80% of the couples were able to achieve orgasm compared with 50% previously in this staged environment.

The women were also asked to fake an orgasm so that these scan results could be compared with those taken during genuine orgasms. There were obvious differences.

Professor Holstege said: "Women can imitate orgasm quite well."

But with genuine orgasm, he said: "What we see is an extreme deactivation of large portions of the brain and especially the emotional parts involved with fear.

"If you look at the women who faked orgasm intentionally you see the motor cortex - the conscious part of the brain - is activated.

"This means the movements that we make in [real] orgasm are not conscious.

"And if you are fearful, it is very hard to have sex. It's very hard to let go."

He said this was useful for men to know.

"When you want to make love to a woman, you must give her the feeling of being protected." hmmm confused

In comparison, the scan results suggested that for men knowing that they would be physically stimulated was important because areas of the brain involved in interpreting touch were highly activated during the experiment.

Since no one answered me, I had to find out... reading

Is it possible for a male to fake an orgasm? I know it is for women, but can men?

Yes – it is possible for men to fake orgasms. It is a common misconception that men always have orgasms. This is because men almost always ejaculate and people assume that ejaculation and orgasm are one and the same. But they are not.

Ejaculation is caused by a build up of sexual tension that causes the muscles near the prostate gland to contract. This sends the fluids from the prostate gland and seminal vesicles into the urethra. This produces the "omigod, I'm coming" sensation, otherwise known as ejaculatory inevitability – or the neurological point of no return. In other words, you can not suck those fluids back up into your glands and vesicles. While all this is going on the brain is sending signals to close off the valve between the bladder and urethra and shoot the ejaculate down the urethra and out the penis. So this would more properly be described as the "omigod, I'm ejaculating" sensation – but that phrase is not as romantic to shout out.

Orgasm is controlled by a different group of nerves in the spine. Like ejaculation, it is caused by a build up of sexual tension. It is characterized by involuntary, rhythmic contraction of the pelvic muscles and usually some weird faces and grunting noises. This usually occurs around the time of ejaculation. But it can happen before or after.

It is possible for men to have orgasms without ejaculating. Some men train themselves to this – like Sting and Woody Harrelson (though you probably could have lived your entire life without knowing this fact about them). They experience the sensation of orgasm without the refractory period (or downtime) that comes with ejaculation, and are able to have multiple orgasms. Some men also have a condition known as retrograde ejaculation which occurs when the valve between their bladder and urethra doesn't close and the ejaculate is forced into the bladder instead of out of the urethra. Men with this condition still experience orgasm.

Men can also ejaculate without having the sensations of orgasm. This can happen for any number of reasons – they are distracted, they are uninterested in sex, or they just don't have one. People can enjoy sex without orgasm. However, the assumption that men always have orgasms can lead some to fake one instead. Faking it can be a tricky situation. Most people do it to spare the feelings of their partner. But this may not be good for anyone involved. It is important to communicate with your partner about the things you enjoy.

Having sex is as much about giving pleasure as it is about receiving it – or at least it should be. You should be comfortable enough to guide your partner to those areas that make your toes curl. It is also important for people to understand that orgasm is not inevitable. It is normal and common to enjoy sex – really enjoy it – without having an orgasm. No one should feel bad about that. You just end up putting a lot of pressure on each other, no one is happy, and you never have an orgasm because they just don't happen when everyone is all tense. It's much more important to relax and focus on having an enjoyable experience.
