'Jackass' Debuts No. 1 at Box Office
Sun Oct 27, 2:23 PM ET
By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Jackass" has pulled its craziest stunt yet, debuting in first place at the box office.

Young men flocked to "Jackass: The Movie," the big-screen version of the MTV show whose stars specialized in bizarre and risky behavior, which debuted with $22.7 million.

Last weekend's winner, Naomi Watts (news)' horror film "The Ring," slipped to No. 2 but actually raised its gross by adding about 650 more theaters. The movie took in $18.8 million, up $3.8 million from opening weekend, pushing its 10-day total to $39.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Another fright flick, "Ghost Ship," opened in third place with $11.7 million. The movie stars Julianna Margulies (news) and Gabriel Byrne (news) as leaders of a salvage crew that finds a haunted ocean liner.

Debuting in much narrower release was Mark Wahlberg (news) and Thandie Newton (news)'s "The Truth About Charlie," a remake of the Cary Grant-Audrey Hepburn crime caper "Charade." Directed by Jonathan Demme, "The Truth About Charlie" opened out of the top 10 with $2.3 million.

"Truth About Charlie" played in 752 theaters, averaging $3,105 a cinema. "Jackass" averaged $9,047 in 2,509 theaters, "The Ring" did $7,137 in 2,634 theaters, and "Ghost Ship" did $4,203 in 2,787 theaters.

The overall box office rose for the seventh straight weekend. The top 12 movies grossed $88 million, up 21 percent from same weekend last year.

Produced for just $5 million, "Jackass" features Johnny Knoxville (news), Steve-O and others from the now-defunct MTV show doing such hazardous or crude acts as roller-skating with bottle rockets attached or urinating on a snow cone.

"People love to watch a train wreck. They can't take their eyes off any horrible thing where you can sit on the sidelines and watch without actually putting yourself in jeopardy," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Two-thirds of the movie's audience was male, and young men from 17 to 24 accounted for nearly half the crowds, according to distributor Paramount.

Executives at Paramount and its MTV subsidiary had expected "Jackass" might gross $20 million at best.

"We didn't expect to exceed $20 million for a film called `Jackass.' Especially a film with no plot, no Oscar-caliber performances and no real writing," said Van Toffler, MTV president. "What they do in the movie sort of feels to me like what the Three Stooges would be doing if they were alive. Kind of slapstick twisted on its head in an extreme form."

The R-rated movie carried warnings urging viewers not to try the stunts themselves, and Paramount offered to provide guards at theaters that wanted extra security to keep those younger than 17 from sneaking in, said Wayne Lewellen, the studio's head of distribution.

Adam Sandler (news) and Emily Watson (news)'s quirky romance "Punch-Drunk Love" broke into the top 10 after two weekends in limited release. The film expanded to 481 theaters, up about 400 from last weekend, and came in at No. 7 with $3.5 million.

The Harlem drug tale "Paid in Full," featuring Mekhi Phifer and Wood Harris, premiered with $1.4 million in 268 theaters for a $5,224 average.

Debuting strongly in limited release was "Frida," starring Salma Hayek (news) and Alfred Molina (news) as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her husband, Diego Rivera. The film, directed by Julie Taymor (news) (Broadway's "The Lion King"), took in $200,000 at five theaters.

Also opening well was "Rodger Dodger," starring Campbell Scott (news) as an odious womanizer, which grossed $52,000 at four theaters.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at North American theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Jackass: The Movie," $22.7 million.

2. "The Ring," $18.8 million.

3. "Ghost Ship," $11.7 million.

4. "Sweet Home Alabama," $6.4 million.

5. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," $6.3 million.

6. "Red Dragon," $4.7 million.

7. "Punch-Drunk Love," $3.5 million.

8. "Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie," $2.9 million.

9. "The Transporter," $2.85 million.

10. "Brown Sugar," $2.8 million.

I'm not saying I'm against seeing the movie per se... I mean, hell, I've enjoyed the tv show as much as any other dumbass... (after a bad case of insomnia...sometimes it's the only thing on!)

But 2 waist $10.00 in a theater? Not!

disbelief

I'd wait 4 the video... after the initial must see teenager get done spending their parents hard earned money, and the novelty wears off, it's a sure quickie 2 video anyway!

I wouldn't waste my gas money to drive to a theatre and pay $10.00 to watch this goofy, head shaking and pointless film. But I will watch it for free at a friend's house whenever it come out on video.

"Jackass": The Boycott?
Mon Oct 28, 2:00 PM ET
By Josh Grossberg

Jackass: The Movie might soon be followed by Jackass: The Boycott.

A father whose teenage son was severely burned after his playmate tried to recreate a prank seen on the MTV show is calling for a boycott of the nation's new number one movie, as well as sponsors of the cable show, the Associated Press reports.

The big-screen version of Jackass--featuring, according to the ads, "stuff you'd never see on TV"--is being distributed by Paramount, MTV's corporate sibling in the Viacom family.

Advising parents to "hit them where it hurts," Albert Lynn says he wants to bring attention to the dangerous antics of Johnny Knoxville (news) & Co. Despite the show's don't-try-this-at-home warnings and the film's R rating, Lynn believes kids are likely to try and copy stunts and end up getting injured or killed.

"The name says it all. You've got to be a jackass to do these things," Lynn says.

Lynn's 12-year-old son, Nick, was hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns last March after playing at a friend's house. A 13-year-old boy doused Nick's shirt with lamp oil and set him on fire, apparently mimicking a scene from the MTV show.

Nick ran outside and was rescued by two other boys, who seized Nick and rolled him in a snow bank, extinguishing the flames.

(While the kids involved, including Nick, denied being influenced by Jackass, when questioned by police, the boy who set Nick alight admitted that he remembered seeing Knoxville and his sadomasochistic skateboarding buddies performing a similar feat.)

The movie's R rating is little comfort for Albert Lynn, who says kids are still going to sneak in to showings. He just hopes they don't try something foolish.

"There's still gonna be kids trying this stuff," he says, adding that he's blocked MTV from his home.

This isn't the first time Jackass pranks have been blamed for serious injuries.

In January 2001, a 13-year-old Connecticut boy was critically burned after two friends poured gasoline on his legs and feet and set him on fire, imitating a scene where Knoxville puts on a flame-resistant suit covered with steaks and stretches over a giant grill for a human barbecue.

That was followed three months later by two Kentucky teenagers were injured after trying to copy a stunt in which one of the boys jumps out of the way of a moving car at the last second.

And just two weeks ago, a woman sued MTV claiming she suffered back and knee injuries and was humiliated during an April 21 taping for an episode which never aired after a cast member bolted across the stage and smashed into a lectern behind her, allegedly forcing her backward onto a concrete floor.

For its part, MTV has denied any wrongdoing in such incidents, saying both the TV show and film include a tagline warning that the "following stunts are performed by professionals" and "insist that neither you nor your dumb little buddies attempt any of what you're about to see."

Playing to an audience comprised mostly of young men under 25, Jackass: The Movie raked in an estimated $22 million, the third best October opening ever. The tally far surpassed the expectations of Viacom execs, who had assumed it might make that amount over its entire run.

Following the slew of copycat injuries last year, family-valuing types like Senator Joseph Lieberman called on MTV to either cancel or tone down the anything-goes show.

The cable net refused, but did move the show to a later time slot. Critics of the show were undoubtedly pleased when torture-happy host Knoxville (real name P.J. Clapp) decided to hang up his fire suit after one season to focus on a movie career (in addition to Jackass: The Movie, he appeared as an evil alien in this summer's Men in Black II). But while the show ceased production in the summer of 2001, MTV continues to air reruns several times a week.

Anticipating the controversy over the film, Knoxville has stressed that he wanted Jackass: The Movie to be rated R.

"People go to car races to watch the crashes. It's the same reason they watch Jackass," Knoxville recently told USA Today. "In every interview, in warnings on the TV show and the movie, we stress 'don’t try this at home.' It's unfortunate when kids get hurt, but I wish parents would monitor what their kids are doing and watching. It's common sense, really."

Nick Lynn, now 13, barely recalls the trauma he suffered because of the stunt. Instead, the eighth-grader has decided to move on with his life and remarkably, he says he doesn't hold any grudges against the show.

"It was funny," he says.
