1977

Since I'm at my post #1977, I'm honoring the stellar year 1977. Man, what a year for music. It's like the whole history of music was wiped clean and the world got to start fresh. So many styles were invented and solidified around this time like ambient, post-punk, synth-pop, new wave, etc. And other established genres hit their peak like disco, album rock and punk. Looking over my cd collection, I can't believe how many first rate albums came from that year and how much diversity there was at that time. I was only 1 year old at the time but I wish I could've experienced some of this first hand. Here's a partial list-

David Bowie- Low
David Bowie- "Heroes"
Iggy Pop- The Idiot
Iggy Pop- Lust For Life
Ramones- Leave Home
Ramones- Rocket To Russia
Talking Heads- 77 (debut)
Blondie- Plastic Letters
Elvis Costello- My Aim Is True (debut)
Television- Marquee Moon (debut)
Sex Pistols- Never Mind the Bollocks (debut)
The Clash- The Clash (debut)
Brian Eno- Before and After Science
Kraftwerk- Trans-Europe Express
Joy Division- Warsaw (scrapped album and their debut)
Donna Summer- Once Upon A Time
Bee Gees- Saturday Night Fever
ABBA- Arrival
Fleetwood Mac- Rumours
and Prince was busy at work on his debut

What are some of the most important and influential albums that I'm missing?

1977 did have some great stuff! It's probably the equivalent of my 1982/83 or 1989.

Or my '93 or '95. I was actually gonna suggest that you start a thread about 1983.

Go for it Jess. Glad I could inspire you. Thanks for coming up with some '77 releases that I would've never come up with. '79 is another great one. I'm sure DavidEye will pipe in with his love for '76. smile

You guys are forgetting one of 1977's biggest albums...

The 'Saturday Night Fever' Movie Soundtrack smile

Released in November 1977,this soundtrack went on to sell over 22 million copies. The Bee Gees were suddenly the hottest group in the world.I was about 8 years old during this time, and these songs were everywhere! "Stayin Alive","How Deep Is Your Love","Night Fever","More Than A Woman"and "If I Can't Have You"...these songs were all over the radio.

June 2nd was a particularly important day in 1977, as it marked the arrival of yours truly, about 8 weeks ahead of schedule (hey, I was eager to get things done ok?)

In fact, 1976. A masterpiece, unquestionably. The 1977 release was 'The Album', which was not quite so masterful.

Actually, Saturday Night Fever has sold closer to 40 million, second only to MJ's Thriller.
