I've done that, and used it as an antacid (I believe that's it's main purpose).

I have a bowl in my closet to keep it from getting musty, but I don't pour it in the trash, I take out the trash & wash the trashcan if necessary.

I do like baking soda, but dump it in the trash? I don't know...

I do it here in Europe. There's a nice estate here in town that is open to the public with bridges, ponds, rolling hills and a few tiny valleys and the walking trails are very popular early mornings and on sunday afternoons weather permitting. I guess since I actually live in the "Nordic" part of Europe it's not a competely silly concept to us . It's simply a tradition way to get a little outdoor excercise. I have done nordic walking on US gym machines before, and though I get a kick out of the distance and calorie burn I can actually measure on the display screen, honestly I miss the romance of doing it in the coutryside with geese and pheasants and thoroughbred hounds running all over the place
