If you want to move south, stick to a city closer to the water (with the exception of Atlanta).

For a New Yorker to move to a smaller southern city can be depressing and a cultural shock.

My recommendation is find college towns near the water since you're young.

Tampa, in my honest opinion, is awesome cause of the multiple colleges (USF being one of them), beaches, nightlife, and amusement parks. Plus most of the people who live here are from elsewhere too, so it's very diverse.

Why not Atlanta? If you are used to a big city, then Atlanta would be a choice. I am in NC for another week. The south is diferent, but get that country stereotype outta your head. I love the South. But I don't think SC would be a good move for you...Unless you'd like to scope out Charleston

I meant, stick to coastal cities, with Atlanta being the exception, since it isn't coastal--i didn't mean stay away from Atlanta.

Charleston may work for you, then. But it's very old South

I live in Atlanta and it is not a bad city. The cost of living is pretty cheap compared to other major cities. The job market is good, but the traffic and the airport is a downer.

I loved the Tidewater area in Virginia. Norfolk (the Ghent area, especially), Virginia Beach... They were nice.

The South isn't as bad or backwards as many think..I've lived in Columbia, SC over half my life and the north for the other part and other than the whole talking slower bit and the obsession for sweet tea, the experiences were not that much different. Sure if you visited Pelion or Lake City or Barnwell SC, it's going to be a little more Mayberry-esque but in Cola town we've got 17 Starbux and Barnes and Noble and art and culture and everything else you find everywhere else. There are still some tried and true rednecks who have too much fondness for the Civil War but every year there are less and less as they die off and whatnot.

Actually Pelion is just a hop skip and jump away and is just fine...I just always think it's a bit odd when I'm headed to the Beach and pass through towns like Turbeville, where they have like an IGA and and couple of stores and that's about it. There are so many places in SC that I have never gone and likely will never go...and the educational conditions in some of the really rural places greatly frustrates me. But I love South Carolina and don't long to go elsewhere.

I live in SC.....not too much happening in the particular city I'm in right now. I usually have to drive a little bit for entertainment. I should be moving to ATL after winter though. I agree, the coastal area is really nice, Charleston or Myrtle Beach. Greenville is starting to blossom. They're always adding big companies & things there.

One of my first roommates was from Pelion. falloff I went to school in Columbia for a while. Not a bad city if you're a student, but I wouldn't wanna live there for good.
