Meercats That blue wren is stunning. One of the things I remember most about Australia are you native birds, they are so exotic. I was once just leaning in the kitchen eating breakfast and a parrot walked across the windowsill. It was a bit of a shock to come back to pidgeons when were you here?

ZombieKitten said: NDRU said: yes, it's terrible. But I want to see the animals, so I go to the zoo. It's a dilemma. open range zoos seem more humane, they have space to roam Yes, I think maybe if we're lucky the old style zoos with cages will disappear. The better zoos are going in that direction anyway. Even at the Oakland Zoo (not one of the best zoos by any stretch of the imagination) soma animals have some space, not just concrete & bars. But there are still some very sad enclosures. I particularly feel for the more intelligent animals like Chimpanzees. My Legacy

i'm going to spend new years eve at the zoo! are you really?! how cool! are you near a nice zoo? The zoo we went to has african music nights AND sleepover luxury "tents" so you can pretend you're camping out in Africa. You fall asleep listening to monkey's screeching and lions roaring, though now I am a bit scared, in case the lions decide to jump out and eat me I mean, just because they never did yet, doesn't mean they couldn't if they tried, right?

I was there 1995-6 on the usual gap year working holiday thingy. I loved it, I think it was the only place I could have lived apart from the UK. Travelled the east coast, spent six months in Sydney and then left from Melbourne. I think that's what every backpacker does, I absolutely loved it. Actually, I would have liked to have spent a couple of years in Thailand. [Edited 12/28/07 0:17am]

But, in a typical girly way my boyfriend asked me to go and he had organised it all. I just had to get my visas and money together (oh, and buy a backpack ) Prior to that, I had no plans to travel and I hate flying!

I got depressed after going there. I suppose zoos serve the purpose of education, and can help bring support to endangered species. Except when they have to kill a beautiful tiger that's almost extinct.
