The Mitchell Report

OK, baseball fans. Get ready for a very interesting day. Supposedly 60-80 players will be named, including, if you believe leaks, Roger Clemens. Let's see how this day plays out.

Clemens and Andy Pettite's name had already come up in reference to performance enhancing drugs so that wouldn't be a surprise to me.

But how accurate is the report? Will it only name people who failed tests in the past or include players that have paper trails to HGH dealers or players that were merely mentioned by people in the know like clubhouse attendants, but with no real proof?

And what will MLB do to the players named? Give them suspensions or no penalty at all?

The Astros traded for Miguel Tejada yesterday, and today he is apparently going to be one of the guys on the list.

I hope the list is 50% hitters and 50% pitchers. That way, either side can say they were juicing to keep up with the other side.

A sad situation, and the players' union is not making it any better. They would not cooperate in any way with Mitchell. It was so bad that Mitchell gave out advance copies to MLB but would not give the union an advance copy.

Should be interesting but at the same time not really surprising. Most people have known for a while that players are juicing.

But that can be said for most sports.

lol Exactly! In fact, I already hear sports analyst "question" the validity of the report - Those same analysts that swear up and down that Bonds is guilty and they've never questioned the validity of the reports that accuse him.

You're gonna hear all kinds of excuses for why Clemens took it and THEN you will see those that don't want Bonds in Cooperstown back off their quest to keep him out because that then means their hero Rocket won't get in. lol

A few thoughts on your post:

I thinks the "Bonds Haters" have many other reasons to dislike Bonds, his apparent juicing is just icing on the cake for most of them.

What asterisk would you put on Clemens? He has not broken any records to put an asterick next to (unlike Bonds who now has two major records).

I don't know how far the report goes back, so I don't know if McGuire will be anywhere in the report or not? But if he is, what hypocrisy???? McGuire was publically shamed and kept out of the Hall of Fame.

If it were not for the perjury charges against Bonds, this report would make him come out looking pretty good.

Well, I hate to break this to you, but unless you've been living under a rock for the past 3 years, Bonds has been the FACE of thhe steroids issue, unless you can show me PROOF that someone else has been vilified and commented on as much as barry eek ?

Now let's see if that face will change once Clemens gets put on blast? hmmm

I think Bonds has been linked to steroids more than anyone else because he holds two of the greatest records in baseball. That's why no one cares that Gary Sheffield also took steroids.

The biggest records Clemens owns is most Cy Young awards and most strikeouts in nine innings (and that is tied with Kerry Wood I believe).

No, Bonds has been the face of the roids issue WELL before he got the homerun title. It's about race and his standoffish attitude along with it.

What I also find funny is how now analysts are saying that since there are so many on the list, and some big fish on that list as well, that they will NOW truly consider this era the roid era. Now, why did it take this report for them to go ahead and truly jump on board with calling it the roid era? Answer: Because a lot of THEIR heroes (Clemens, Pettite) are on that list. As long as Bonds was the face of it, they didn't really care if it was called the roid era or not.

No, they didn't. In fact, people didn't even think he'd be around to even do it because his body was falling apart. When he went on his HR tear almost 6 or 7 years ago, no one gave a damn about any records he was breaking UNTIL BALCO hit a few years after that.

I have a couple of observations here with regard to the whole performance enhancing drug issue in baseball and other sports.

First of all, while the International Olympic Committee, the NFL. the NBA, and FIFA all had comprehensive bans on performance enhancing drugs and effective drug testing for these drugs instituted during the 1980's and 1990's, baseball didn't even put in a ban on these drugs until 2000, and they didn't even have an effective penalty system for positive tests or even effective drug tests until 2005. So there may be a whole slew of players who were getting juiced up and were not subject to any consequences during the time they were playing in baseball.

Another point; in 1994, the baseball players went on strike, and the baseball owners subsequently canceled the World Series that season. That caused so much ill will towards the fans that they gave up on baseball and started following the NFL and NBA. When the strike ended in 1995, nearly all of the teams lost a portion of their fanbase, some of whom to this day have not been able to bring back to the stadiums.

It wasn't until 1998, during the great home run chase of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, that fans began coming back in droves to watch baseball. The public image of baseball at that time was so far down that the powers that be would do anything to bring fans back. Even during that season, it was documented that Mark McGwire was taking a nutritional supplement which worked as a precursor to anabolic steroids, but the players, owners, media, and even fans were willing to overlook this type of performance enhancement for the sake of the home run chase. Nike even did a commercial with Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine with the tagline. "Chicks dig the long ball."

It wasn't even until 2000 that baseball instituted a policy for performance enhancing drugs, and that was spearheaded primarily from pressure from the IOC and other sports leagues to regulate their athletes. Even then, however, the baseball payers union had watered down the initial penalties so much that athletes almost quite literally had to be caught with performance enhancing drugs in their possession before any punitive action could be taken against them.

Now these days, it's not only steroids which has become an issue; it's also the use of human growth hormone (HGH). While both steroids and HGH have medical uses, steroids themselves are primarily used to rebuild muscle. HGH, on the other hand, has a number of uses from strength training, to weight loss, to severe injuries, and even growth disorders in children. While someone who wants to get steroids can probably get a supply from an unscrupulous dealer, HGH can only be obtained by a doctor's prescription. However, there are a lot of so-called anti-aging clinics around the country where doctors distribute HGH. HGH has a lot of beneficial uses, but some players (and doctors) get around the performance enhancement bans by prescribing HGH for various injuries and "other conditions". The other problem with HGH is that it cannot be easily tested for its presence in the bloodstream with the most common drug testing available today.

Bonds became the face of the Roid issue because of the Balco scandal. Everything was good with him until that scandal broke. Remember back to when he was breaking the single season home run record back in 2001? Standing ovations in every park he played and for every home run he hit. They would break into network TV shows every time Bonds came up to every at bat when he was about to break the record. If it was about his race, none of this would have happened.

Also, it can't really be called the "roid era" if only a few people were juicing. But the Mitchell report outs nearly 100, when it goes from a few to many or most, then it's called the "roid era".

Has anyone read the report? The info on Clemens is very specific--injections in the butt that began when he was with Toronto. disbelief

And what a surprise, no players listed that took steroids when they were with the Red Sox. That's what happens when you have a Bosox official compiling the report.

This statement proves my point.

Barry was celebrated and appreciated during his single season home run chase back in 2001. Standing ovations everywhere. Cheered everywhere. All kinds of awards (MVP, silver slugger, etc....)

Then Balco hit and he was villified (rightly or wrongly) because of it.

Yeah, all the Bosox players like Clemens, Gagné and Mo Vaughn either are linked to steroids/HGH after they left the team or before they got there. The only Bosox player Mitchell was willing to give up was utility infielder Manny Alexander from 2000. confused

And despite what the above list says, I did not see Jason Varitek's name anywhere in the report.
