Star Wars...overrated?

Does anyone feel that the movies are outdated and don't hold water any longer?

If anything, they´re totally underrated and most ignorant people just see them as another science fiction movies based in the future , though the movie says " A long time ago, in a galaxy far away.." lol
George Lucas really worked his ass off to create these masterpieces, and he really believed in what he was doing, hats off to that, and he took many popular mythologies and created something new ( in some way, this reminds me a bit of Prince...creating something new from old ingredients, creating your own little world....) . Germany has the Grimm brothers ( great collectors of fairy tales ) , the Danes have Christian Andersen, the English have JRR Tolkien, and the Turks and Arabs have Dede Korkut and 1001 Nights...but America has George Lucas, creator of one of my favorite fairy tales ever.
Star Wars is untouchable...and sometimes it takes a closer, second look to realize what it´s all about.
Much respect to George Lucas, one of the most inspiring people in Hollywood who never really wanted to be a part of Hollywood.

"doesn't hold water," like the logic of building such a huge Achilles heel into the design of the Death Star doesn't make sense?

Yes, I know...that´s why I said " No,they are underrated ", which means I think that they are not overrated at all. Maybe overcommercialized but that´s another story.

Hey, thanks...and I´m not even an American.
wink --but I guess that´s the beauty of Star Wars, it has such an universal appeal and a message that every human being can relate to. A classic "Good vs. Evil" story with all the right ingredients, and it´s about soo many things, really.I also like the positive, uplifting spiritual message in it, especially Master Yoda´s interpretation of The Force...that part where he says "Illuminous beings are we, not this crude matter. "
I love Star Wars !
Make sure you watch that comparatively new documentary DVD with almost four hours of bonus footage that comes with the DVD box set.

It seems to be en vogue currently to bash Lucas, but the bottom line is he created one of the most enduring and iconic franchises in the short history of film, but Star Wars has transcended film and really become a part of our culture. The effect of those films on the world tells me they are not overrated.

He may have lost his way with the newer ones and his tinkering with the originals. He thought Star Wars was for kids and it was, in the 70s. Those kids grew up and had kids of their own who also loved the movies and understood them. When he added all the bells and whistles and then went for the kid friendly comic relief of Jar Jar Binks, he really underestimated the audience, even the kids. His fans, even young ones were much more sophistacated than he was.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

yeah in the end he created a whole mythology. Borrowed from others, but still an amazing achievement.

I liked the first 2 (IV & V) after that it's, pretty mediocre. It might have helped if George Lucas had done things other that the SW franchise. He has a limited talent and has never sought to stretch it out and live atop of his Star Wars throne.

good point. When he made Star Wars he had done other films previously to exercise his craft.

But by the time Episode I rolled around he'd pretty much limited himself to technical stuff.

also, making three movies might be why episodes I II & III got better towards the end

A New Hope was very good, Empire was classic - the best ever. The franchise jumped the shark with Return of the Care Bears.
