Death of a Pet The other day I had to witness one of my outdoor cats getting hit and killed by a pick up truck ! It was one of the worst things too see ever in front of my eyes! I was so sad to see him hurt from the pain as his lil soul left this planet! Granted he was a barn cat,but I still have love for all animals! That damn road has taken 4 cats this year, and one of them died from pregnancy complications. So I have had to lay to rest 5 cats and one kitten. At one point there was 10 cats that I was feeding and watering, now I am down to just two! Some might say get em fixed, well at around $55 for a male and $75 for a female I can not afford it.And I have had no luck with local or state agencies trying to assist with the cost! Watchin' that cat get hit made me wanna say "Fuck It"and quit feeding the two that are left! But my heart will not allow me to do that,it's winter and they need food to surrvive the cold! After layin him to rest. I came in the house and cried like crazy ! Just thought that I would vent a little and get that off my chest ! That's awful. sorry.
I feel you on the trying to help out stray cats. It's so hard to not try and help them but at the same time caring for them keeps them breeding and the problem never goes away. I do think it's worth it to at least get one of the two left fixed.

So hard when a pet dies.....sorry for your loss.
Something weird and sort of related- I had one male and female Beta(Siamese fighting fish)... they slept side by side in the fish tank for like three months, he became ill and died. As he lay at the bottom of the tank, the female kept swimming by him repeatedly slapping her body against his... I was fascinated by her behavior but took him out the tank so she would stop suffering. She stopped eating and nipping at the glo-fish like she would normally do.Three days passed and I decided to get another fish. The moment I placed a new male beta in the tank she swam to the bottom laid on her side and died the next day. She looked healthy and didn't look as though she was sick. Weird, I never thought fish had feelings, something I will never forget. Never thought I would miss those little guys so much

it's hard....Apollo, my dog i had for ten years died easter week of this year. i had his name tatooed on my arm when i got him, cuz he was a bad ass looking pit bull! the day after he died, i put 1997-2007 around his name on my arm. i went to the shelter and adopted a 1 year old pit/shepard mix that was found tied to a tree with a rope. i figured it was intended for me to have him since the people at the shelter named him Lewis, which is my last name ( i renamed him Diablo, because i swear he's the fucking devil with fur and cute face!). this dog is a ball of energy and can jump 6 feet straight into the air (trust me, he's jumped my 5 ft fence more than a few times). i kinda got used to the lazy lump that my older dog was, we were like an old married couple--not too much on the excitement side, but very comfortable. his death kinda set off the bad year i had (my dog (old age), a good friend (terminal cancer), grandmother (renal kidney failure) and mom (heart attack/renal failure) all died within four months of each other. but the one thing that my new dog has shown me is that life goes on, and a new pet can bring you joy like your old one, just in a different way. he chases leaves, rats, squirrels, paper..anything moving. and at sixty pounds, i usually get dragged along with him
. good luck ...it's okay to cry [Edited 12/5/07 15:03pm] [Edited 12/5/07 15:10pm]

[Edited 12/5/07 4:23am] I know what it's like to lose a cat that you loved, it is NEVER easy. You are wise to keep feeding the remaining two kitties. They are depending on you for food. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Vent and cry all you need to. I'm really sorry you had to see that! I watched at least 3 pets die (not like that, but it STILL hurt) before my eyes. The first I had was a yellow Parakeet named Sweety. I bought him when I was in 2nd grade. He died by the time I was in 9th. The second bird I had was also a Parakeet. We had given her to my gramma. I loved her especially because she was aggressive yet very affectionate. She seemed to love me the most. We got her around the time I moved and took my first bird home with me. When she died, gramma cried. She was so pretty and dark blue... The last bird to pass away would be my bird Quatre. He was a hybrid parakeet (white and pastel blue) who was a scaredy cat but still funny sometimes. He never let me hold him until his dying day. He stared at me for so long until he passed. He was so calm....so quiet..and then, well. It really really hurt to see him go. They all were pretty old, though. We raised from babies to way past life expectancy.
Ah well. That's just a little sad story. Keep feeding the little kitties, though. That's very kind of you.

I saw a dog get hit by a car. I didn't even know the dog but I was devastated just the same at such a sudden taking of a life. I have lost 2 of my beloved pet cats, and my parents' dog is probably not going to live much longer. it sucks.

When I was a kid my Gerbil died. Crazy part is that I don't know how it died. I just went to go look into it's cage and it was lying there dead. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

how long do gerbils live? my sister kept pet rats, and they would die of old age after a year or so

I used to have gerbils as a kid. Every time one would die, I would cry like I lost my best friend. I love gerbils, they are really cute! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Just looked it up, and found this on Wikipedia: Pet gerbils have an average lifespan of 2 to 4 years. Some have been known to live five or six years. That sounds accurate, since the gerbils I had lived between 2 to 4 years. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
