Best - First Contact, Wrath of Khan

Worst - the one Shatner directed...OMFG....

I have this argument with my friends all the time about the effect of Star Trek on popular culture over Star Wars.

Star Trek changed our CULTURE.
Star Wars were some movies that were alright when we were kids.

And of course, odd number Star Trek movies = bad, even numbers = good. (even though i really liked ST: The Motion Picture.

And TNG, DS9, and Voyager all were really good television at different points.

If anything, they´re totally underrated and most ignorant people just see them as another science fiction movies based in the future , though the movie says " A long time ago, in a galaxy far away.." lol
George Lucas really worked his ass off to create these masterpieces, and he really believed in what he was doing, hats off to that, and he took many popular mythologies and created something new ( in some way, this reminds me a bit of Prince...creating something new from old ingredients, creating your own little world....) . Germany has the Grimm brothers ( great collectors of fairy tales ) , the Danes have Christian Andersen, the English have JRR Tolkien, and the Turks and Arabs have Dede Korkut and 1001 Nights...but America has George Lucas, creator of one of my favorite fairy tales ever.
Star Wars is untouchable...and sometimes it takes a closer, second look to realize what it´s all about.
Much respect to George Lucas, one of the most inspiring people in Hollywood who never really wanted to be a part of Hollywood.

OR, we could just list the many ways that Star Trek has influenced our culture and compare it to how Star Wars hasn't and it would be a pretty short discussion.

The original trilogy was alright. If you took out the cast (which is primarily what made it extraordinary) then it's pretty blah.

Which is why the second trilogy was a DISASTER.

i can't even transport my brain to the bizarro world that inspired the first paragraph of your response, so you just go ahead and make that list and i'll make sure nobody messes with your lovely tin foil hat.

SERIOUSLY, i'm not even gonna get into a "star trek vs. star wars" debate, because to me, there's no debate to be had. each franchise has had a HUGE impact on popular culture, and i'm sure both franchises have influenced each other over the years. i'm not even getting into this particular "either/or" foolishness. take it to fanboy.com talk to the hand

and, um, if you took out the cast of the original star wars trilogy, you'd be left with all the special effects, creature designs, costumes, and one of the most famous film soundtracks of all time.

are you okay? lol

I feel the first one from the 70's is horribly dated. But Empire Strikes Back is one of my favorite films ever. I suppose it was due to the leap in technology and budget, but even as a story, it was grand. Although ironically I realize it flows on greatly from the first.

For me, it's all due to the modern prequels. Seeing Darth Vader twisting plastic knobs in his clunky fighter in IV, then as a child operating a sleek, high-tech jet with computer targeting or some such stuff in Phantom Menace puts me off. Also all that Battledroid nonsense. Honestly George, your galaxy far far away has more holes than Paris Hilton.

It's still an obvious influence on many modern movies, tv shows, the way many big movie project businesses are strategized, and games, and even the real life technology like car interiors, interfaces, software, etc.

I'd say most people are quite underrating it.

Absolutely not. Star Wars changed everything.

It consolidated a lot of famous myths and archetypes into one unforgettable combination.

Darth Vader is the epitome of the irresistibly cool villain, lightsabers are the quintessential mythological weapon, and The Force is the most brilliant spiritual component ever in a sci-fi series.

Star Wars introduced special effects that were unheard of at the time, and that's why you have all those Pixar films now that people love so much. That's not even to mention the fact that it had the courage to introduce a symphony orchestra soundtrack in an era of disco, and an upbeat, positive message in an era of anti-heroes.

It's not overrated at all. It's a crucial part of American popular culture.

Outdated from a production standpoint -- sure. Overrated? Heck no! As some have suggested, that original trilogy was probably the definitive hero's journey at least in Western literature since C.S. Lewis' work. I'd say the only thing we've gotten since then even approaching that level of success in tapping the power of myth is the Harry Potter series. (The books, not the films.)

The latter three Star Wars films were utter trash, though.

i don't think the second trilogy was UTTER trash. it was maybe like a few kernels of really tasty stuff mixed into a trash casserole. you could see the outline of lucas' original intended story of anakin skywalker struggling for air within a whole new unnecessary universe of craptacularness. and if nothing else, c'mon, the second trilogy brought us yaddle. who doesn't love yoda in drag?

Except for the second half of Revenge of the Sith, I agree with your statement. But as I said earlier, Lucas started losing it in Jedi.
