George Lucas really worked his ass off to create these masterpieces, and he really believed in what he was doing, hats off to that, and he took many popular mythologies and created something new ( in some way, this reminds me a bit of Prince...creating something new from old ingredients, creating your own little world....) . Germany has the Grimm brothers ( great collectors of fairy tales ) , the Danes have Christian Andersen, the English have JRR Tolkien, and the Turks and Arabs have Dede Korkut and 1001 Nights...but America has George Lucas, creator of one of my favorite fairy tales ever.
Star Wars is untouchable...and sometimes it takes a closer,second look to realize what it´s all about.
Much respect to George Lucas, one of the most inspiring people in Hollywood who never really wanted to be a part of Hollywood.

I only saw the first three. "Star Wars" rocked. The other two were OK.

It seems to be en vogue currently to bash Lucas, but the bottom line is he created one of the most enduring and iconic franchises in the short history of film, but Star Wars has transcended film and really become a part of our culture. The effect of those films on the world tells me they are not overrated.

He may have lost his way with the newer ones and his tinkering with the originals. He thought Star Wars was for kids and it was, in the 70s. Those kids grew up and had kids of their own who also loved the movies and understood them. When he added all the bells and whistles and then went for the kid friendly comic relief of Jar Jar Binks, he really underestimated the audience, even the kids. His fans, even young ones were much more sophistacated than he was.

I liked the first 2 (IV & V) after that it's, pretty mediocre. It might have helped if George Lucas had done things other that the SW franchise. He has a limited talent and has never sought to stretch it out and live atop of his Star Wars throne.
