Well there are two solutions to that, aren't there?

A)have corporations and chains actually, y'know, train their employees. I work at a big-box chain and the training -or lack thereof, is fucking abysmal.
B)have the CEO's pay their employees enough money to actually give a shit about what they're doing. I'm sorry, but if someone's working a wage that amounts to 7 bucks after deductions, they're just not going to try all that hard.

i think the obnoxious thing is, management puts SO much pressure on employees to "provide outstanding customer service!" yet management gives employees ZERO tools with which to be "outstanding", so we end up with store clerks hassling customers with a bunch of "can i help you" when the reality is NO, YOU HAVE NO ABILITY TO HELP ME WHATSOEVER! lol

Exactly. nod

I like to think I'm resonably good at the whole deal by now, but I have been in various retail for 4 years now. Some of the noobs I've got to try to train at work are pathetic though. And since I've been given no training models to go by, in all honesty I'm just winging it.

Over time my training technique's improved though. I go out of my way now to show trainees little things here and there that we don't officially have to do, but that help. Like, only approach a customer if they actually look like they need help with something, don't touch money until you're sure the customer is through counting change, volunteer information instead of just giving yes or no answers, etc. And even though it's a corporate no-no, I've been telling new folk just to outright recommend another store if we don't have something. It beats the hell out of the "Do you have X product?" "Uh, no." exchange that seems to be encouraged.

I haven't been in a wal mart in many years, but I never had the impression it was an establishment where one would easily find veggie hot dogs. I support and applaud you never going there again, but ya kinda walked into that one.

Hmmm ~ maybe but the Meijers next door has a great vegetarian section (they are both superstores and are cut throat in competition). I do agree that the wages are dismal and the employees at all of these superstores have to endure a lot from customers and the many chains of command they are forced to jump hoops for but a little hospitality can really brighten the atmosphere of even the gloomiest concrete box.

You don't know the half of it.

Doesn't matter what a customer does or says; how rude or ignorant or mean or stupid they might get, we're expected to just stand there and take it -with a smile. If you had any idea how many cashiers and floor workers I've seen forced to grin and bear it in the face of customer bullshit, then walk into the back and burst into tears...sigh

If those asswipes up at corporate headquarters spent even half an hour dealing with customers face to face, you know we'd sure as hell be getting a decent living wage instead of the bare minimum they can get away with paying us.

yeah, target divides their space much better. I hate Wal Mart.

Im talking about the people.
I surprised I've never seen someone butt naked wacking off in the bread isle or fat lady taking a dump in the video section.
smile

I have a friend who worked at a WalMart and saw some woman during the midnight shift take a clock off the shelf, put it on the floor, and proceed to take a shit ON THE CLOCK! eek She then walked away, leaving her ahem, BUSINESS, in the middle of the isle and continued her shopping.

I worked at a Wal Mart for a month eons ago, and all I can say is, when customer service has to be legislated by higher ups, it's NEVER going to be good.
