Really sad story about a girl in a St. Louis suburb who committed suicide behind an adult prank on MySpace. Dardenne Prairie is very close to where I live and only recently has this story began to make waves nationally. It's unfortunate that no criminal charges can be filed against the woman responsible for this hoax.

I AM SO RELIEVED SOMEONE POSTED THIS.

I've seen that story run on CNN twice over the last weekend, and I was just STUNNED that a parent could be that sociopathic to seek vengeance against her child's school rival. This is even scarier than that story about the Texas cheerleader mom who murdered her daughter's competition in the early 90's disbelief.Because at least in that case it's easier to mount evidence and have a trial. But cyberspace crimes are so new without precedents...it's a slippery slope for the victims to have to endure...

...and how about the fact that even knowing the true identity of the perpetrator, the police initially chose not to do ANYTHING and the mother told the victim's family to get lost ??? That is just vile mad

Knowing how much of a bitch Karma can be, knowing how human beings eventually reap what they sow...I want to feel sorry for the lady that did this to that little girl...but somehow, it's not quite coming to pass confused

There's A LOT that they left out of the printed version of this story whofarted. For example, that the mother posing as the fake love interest (Josh) sent Megan a barriage of insulting notes when they "broke up", and told her the world would be better off if she was dead, after which she went upstairs and hung herself neutral In addidtion, after investating on their own and finding out who the real "Josh" was, when they went to the police, they got ZERO help. Even their lawyers advised them not to aggressively pursue the issue on their own or via the media...it's just an insanely horrbible story disbelief

Yes, the people who perpetrated the hoax are vile slugs. But the girl's parents are also morons. Who (in their right mind) lets a 13-year-old hang on the internet without supervision? Especially a child who's being treated for mental health issues?

There's plenty of blame to go around, that's for sure.

nod

Her own mother encouraged (or allowed) her to carry on such an intense internet relationship for a young child, her mom had to know at the very least that there are predators that pose on these pages.

Of course that doesn't excuse any adult of any kind for preying on the vulnerablities of the young.

The parents can be accused of extremely poor decision making, but Lori Drew is just pure evil.

Megan didn't always make good choices because of her ADD, Tina says.

I think it's more likely that poor Megan didn't make good choices because her ethically challenged mother didn't have the sense God gave lettuce.

No, this does not excuse the actions of the other adults (as I noted above, they are scum). But a parent's #1 job is to protect his or her child -- by any means necessary. Tina didn't do that. It was more important that Megan be happy in the short term and think of her mom as a friend than to be a tough parent.

Okay people...so i'm hearing a whole lot of the mother didn't do this and the mother didn;t do that...what about the fathers? they weren't there either...they didn't stop what was going on...they are to blame as well.

Don't just crucify the mom here.

I agree, for the most part, about being a parent first and friend second. It's clear that the Meiers' made some poor choices in respect to Megan and internet use, but I cut them some slack because I can't imagine the eggshells you must be walking on dealing with a child who has already tried to take their life once, is battling severe depression and ADD.

Again, it doesn't excuse them, but there were some significant challenges there.

As a parent of a almost 17 year old, omgosh, there are so many mistakes I've made.

I wouldn't call the parents "morons" either. The parents could have thought this would benefit their child in some way to reach out and make a friend.

There are no perfect parents.

The parents made some mistakes but I'm not going to BLAME them for the death of their child.

nod I wish more people could have seen the interviews from the victim's parents. I truly believe they thought that Megan's new "friend" was harmless.
And from what I've seen of the mother, she blames herself tremendously because in the end she reprimanded her daughter about the dangers of the interenet instead of consoling her.

Megan's parents were storing a football table for them they were obviously on speaking terms before this happened.
If there were really problems between their children the opportunity was there to sort them out without deceiving anyone.

To make a child the victim of a sick joke like that is evil disbelief .

This is so horrible and malicious of an 'adult'... I can't blame the neighborhood for acting that way either. If I was them though, I would move already because nobody is gonna forget that, ever. Then again, if nothing can be done legally, they are getting punishment at some level from the neighbors.

Scary reality of today though...

the adult who drove the 13 year old to suicide is Lori Drew. She did this in conjunction with her daughter. She is an ugly old hag....and Meagan, the child she victimized was absolutely beautiful.

there are zillions of websites that list the address of the Drew's if you would like to send her a card letting her know your thoughts.

Thre is an active movement in the town to "SHUN" the family. Businesses are fusing to serve, and people are letting Lori Drew know they don't want any people like her in the neigborhood.

If you want to send that biotch a card letting her know your disgust....google her. I hope they flee the country.

Now, I wouldn't encourage anyone to advocate any violence against the assholes who drove this poor girl to kill herself; that would be just as wrong as what they did in the first place. But I will say what goes around definitely comes around, and karma is a bitch.

How quickly would you have put that bitch in the hospital? Forget trashing the table, I'd trash her face.

I can understand your sentiment but, I don't advocate violence. However, I understand. It's low down bastards like that who violate & illegally invade people's lives ,thinking they can get by with it and need to be taught a lesson at their own game. One thing about it, in the end, they'll reap what they sow. And like the saying goes, Karma is a motherfucker that's for sure.

How could this child have trusted anybody online that much, you neveer know who your really talking to. I saw on Oprah how a 700lb woman had no friends because people who saw her were so disgusted by her appearance, then she got a computer and became addicted because people who could not see her were the only ones to treat her fairly and became her friends, how sad this world is. sad
