I've never seen the Godfather movies and I really don't have any intention to.
I also had to skip the English Patient cause if one more person told me how wonderful it was I was going to kill someone or something. I'm sure it's a good movie, but after all I heard there was no way it would have lived up to expectation.

The only decent thing about the English Patient was the Dust storm.

And seeing Kristin Scott Thomas nekkid. I had been waiting for that since Under The Cherry Moon. drool

lol I've only seen 3 minutes of the movie and it happened to be the dust storm. The rest looked like you could put it in a bottle and you'd have a rival for Lunesta!

It was embarrassing to watch Mickey Rooney as the Japanese landlord and being the morbid person that I am, I thought the ending was a little too "up". Other than that, I loved it. I have a mild fascination with New York City in the 60s right now. I'm also currently discovering the magic that is That Girl on DVD.

Dont bother with comic book blockbusters anymore (x-men, fantastic four, new superman etc..), as they have gone beyond cliche now. Infact, they did years ago.

Yeah that Mickey Rooney part is really cringe-worthy and in part because of that role, Hollywood started to change how they depicted asians. DId you catch that she was a hooker? They really don't get into that part of the book, but she's apparently a high class call girl.

Yes! But only after it was spelled out to me in the making of on the DVD. At the time I was wondering what $50 for the powder room meant. I'm not down with the old lingo.

The current TV series Mad Men takes place around the same time so I'm loving that too.

I really try not to see the superhero ones as they are all pretty bad. I will go and check out Graphic Novels like V for Vendetta or Sin City. Two that I am reading are being commissioned for movies are Ex-machina and Y Last Man. I think The Watchmen is as well.

Yeah, I guess they are not summer/xmas blockbuster material so they dont bother me so much. I just hope Hollywood gets over this comic book obsession, its too easy to make a film from a comic book if you just use "spiderman" as your template.

That's because it's subtitled. Subtitles are almost a sure way to scare off American audiences. It was a popular film outside the U.S. and a great one too.

It was pretty popular here, too, but kind of like saying a book is popular. Harry Potter aside, not many people read books, even popular ones, and not many people see foreign & indie films.

I loved it though!

I tried finding an exact U.S. box office count for the movie and it seems to be in the $12 million range. Not bad at all for an almost 20 year-old foreign film, but still not one that I think can be considered to be 'seen by everyone' in the states.

I saw the director's cut first. I'm not sure if I would have liked the original edited version as much if I had seen that one first. I would have wanted to have known what happened!

right, I hear ya. Definitely not a summer blockbuster

I remember everyone was talking about it at the time, but I was working in a book store (That's probably how I came up with my analogy smile) But book people probably see more foreign films than the average bear.

I haven't seen the director's cut hmmm

Bitter Moon by Roman Polanski, I wont spoil it for anyone, but it is an absolute must see, Hugh Grant and Kristin brilliantly casted for this film. One of my all time fav films.
