Yes and No
This will be my first holiday 5000 miles away from my family. We are going to do Thanksgiving here in England so that should be fun. I will miss my mom's yummie food but I have had years where I had to have Thanksgiving with my ex in-laws. This Christmas will be very different for me. The good side of it is that I will not be pressured to shop for two families. It will be a lot less stressful and less expensive. I plan to only buy a few gifts for my family. hugs to you Nancy ....

I like Christmas, but I guess I'm just kinda sick of it The other day,I went to the mall to buy a pair of pants and sure enough,in JCPenney's,they already have their Christmas trees and decorations up!! Please....can't we at least get through Thanksgiving first?!
I enjoyed Christmas so much more when I was a kid.It just ain't the same anymore.

can you believe they are already hitting us with commercials for christmas?????
on the one hand they blame low consumer spending for a sagging economy. on the other hand they call folks out for credit card debt and lack of savings? wtf?????

enough with the "poor" talk people...my great grandmother used to say "you're not poor unless you dont know where you're next meal is coming from"...
the holidays can be enjoyed if you can ignore all the stupid shit that seems to go along with 'em more and more each year...the thing I notice is that the holidays tend to bring out the best in alot of people...thats a nice, refreshing occurence, even if its only temporary... I always keep in mind that there are those that are worse off than I am...some have no family to spend the holidays with, let alone worry about affording gifts for them...most families understand financial hardships...if anybody is bothered that they cant give gifts during xmas, volunteer time to a charity of your choosing...thats a pretty meaningful gift, if you ask me...

I am a little bit of a scrooge but it's only because the meaning of Christmas has been terribly distorted. Just think about the true meaning.

i give persons gifts when i feel like it.
not when its a holiday, and especially not when im being made to feel like i have to. screw businesses who are trying to set records and counting money they accumulate over holidays.

sonic said: I am dreading it...its so stressful for me, hubby has a BIG family . for the past 4 yrs weve gone to his sisters for a BIG family dinner...about 10 little kids running around screaming, hyper , jacked up on suger
They tear open a gift ...toss it aside then on to the next without even KNOWING who gave it to them!!!! just once id love to stay home & have a QUIET dinner. I was thinking of going to swiss chalet x-mas eve, just for a change? Last yr I made scarves for 4 of my SIL's (I love to knit) so that was cheap for me...maybe you can MAKE something as gifts? go to the $ store...I LOVE the $ store. How about a personalized CD...or photo DVD? a gift certificate for a free backrub? my mum died 3 yrs ago & i always get sad at this time..i miss her alot. Hang in there..just try to appreciate what you have, there are people who are alot worse off~ (((hugs))) Wow, with all the Prince drama I totally forgot about this thread. I'm sorry to hear about your mom passing away, that always puts a big damper on the holidays. Your husband's family sounds like my sister-in-law's family: A bunch of people sitting around eating and talking, and a bunch of little kids running around screaming. Don't get me wrong, I like little kids, but their ear-piercing screams get to be too much after awhile. Going to a swiss chalet with just your hubby sounds like a great idea! Very romantic, just the two of you, spending time alone sounds ideal! Unfortunately, I can't knit, and my family is the type who makes scads more money than I do, so they have all the CDs and picture DVDs that they could ever want. Same with their kids, I don't even bother buying them toys (just clothes), because it's just a big waste of money. Everything that is out there, they already have. I'll just have to tell everybody that "I'm sorry, I can't buy gifts for you this year". Don't know what else I'm supposed to do. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

That will be hard to be so far away from your family. But Christmas in England will definitely be a new experience for you. And not having to buy gifts for two families does make it a heck of a lot easier. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I enjoyed Christmas so much more when I was a kid.It just ain't the same anymore. Agreed! As I said in an earlier post, Christmas has become way too commercialized. It was a heck of a lot more fun when I was little. Now it's just an excuse for family members to get together and argue about religion. Real fun! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Well, I am pretty poor right now, contrary to what others may think. I'm living on unemployment compensation, and I have to take money of what I'm getting to pay for license plate renewals, property taxes and car insurance, all coming due within the next few months (well over $1,000). Plus I have to pay all my other bills, groceries, gas for my car, etc. etc. Volunteering though sounds like a great idea. I used to volunteer at a church downtown when I worked there, in a food kitchen serving homeless people lunch. I need to find something like that again, because I really enjoyed it. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
