And some cultures wear way too much perfume and cologne... A practice that can be equally offensive.

Well, this one time, a saleswoman started deconstructing whatever skin flaws she thought I have, or wanted me to think I have...

Gave me some insight into what a lot of women must go through.

I can one-up ya, on foul smells: try catheterizing someone's bladder who weighs 300+ pounds, where you need someone to hold up the folds to find the area, and they haven't washed "down there" in awhile, as it's too difficult to reach, or what not. Face mask required, and elbow length gloves.

This is a great website....it took a while to find it:

http://www.cf.ac.uk/biosi...fact1.html

My understanding of the olfactory system is, there is "fatigue". When exposed to a constant scent, the system no longer recognizes it. If you spray your body with a boat load of perfume, you don't notice the strong scent after awhile. Everyone else does, because their nasal sensors aren't over exposed.
Same with body odor. The person doesn't realize he/she smells poorly.

Here's some interesting info from the site:

Sperm may smell their way to the egg. Smell receptor has been identified in human sperm (1Spehr et al., Science 2003). This receptor functions in sperm chemotaxis and may be a critical component of the fertilization process.

Women able to detect the "scent of fear" (2Ackerl, Atzmueller and Grammer, 2002). Female subjects wore underarm (axillary) pads while watching a scary movie or a neutral movie. The pads were presented to a panel of women who were able to discriminate between "fear" and "non-fear" axillary pads.

Pam Dalton, of the Monell Institute, Philadelphia, has created what she calls "Stench Soup", an odour mixture that smells so bad it makes you feel like throwing up. Why should anyone want to do this? Well a clue comes from the fact that the Department of Defense is interested in it as a non-lethal weapon. (All sorts of schoolboy taunts and insults come to mind!)

Schizophrenia is associated with a decreased capacity to experience pleasure within the olfactory domain (4Crespo-Facorro et al., JAMA 2001).

A Japanese group in Kyoto led by Yasuyuki Yanagida are making a "smell cannon" for use with virtual reality displays. The idea is to track the nose with a CCD camera linked to a moving platform and to fire a doughnut-shaped vortex of odour directly at the nose. The group have demonstrated that these smell doughnuts can be fired accurately for a distance of 4-5m. Link to website (24 Mar 2004)

(Oct 2005) Male mice with a genetic modification that disrupted the function of the olfactory epithelium (lack of cyclic nucleotide gated cation channel CNGA2) failed to show any sexual behaviour towards female mice and did not become aggressive when introduced to foreign males - a situation that normally induces aggressive behaviour. [Published online: Nature Neuroscience 30 October 2005; | doi:10.1038/nn1589: Deficits in sexual and aggressive behaviors in Cnga2 mutant mice, Vidya S Mandiyan, Jennifer K Coats & Nirao M Shah, University of California, San Fransisco].

I don't hardly wear deodorant, purely because I don't stink. My friends have told me this before.... I only wear it if I remember, or if I'm going on a date or something fancy.
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

I'll take a stab at this, although I don't know for sure. I'd bet it has something to do with unnecessary adornment. They might assume if you wash properly and frequently enough, you shouldn't unbearably stink. And if you do smell a wee bit earthy, it's simply a natural smell we all should be able to live with -- we are humans afterall, not manikins.

My guess is many cultures with attitudes akin to this would allow for some scentless deodorants, but have a greater apprehension about noticeably perfumed ones.

For my part, I wear deodorant daily, but I haven't worn antiperspirant since undergrad. Except for folk with some physiological problem that causes them to inordinately sweat, if the body needs to perspire, it should perspire, I think. I don't like the idea of caking aluminums and other metal salts into my pores to be cute and perfect.

My Favorite: thumbs up!

I've never heard of deodorant being banned anywhere, but in Japan we were strongly advised against wearing it if it had a strong scent. The reason is that the Japanese are quite sensitive to strong tastes and strong scents in general. Their food does have flavour but it's almost never spicy, and their perfumes and deodorants are extremely weak (when I ran out of my own deo, I bought a Japanese one and I could barely smell it even if I put my nose in my armpit, lol). On the other hand, they're very insensitive to sound and noise. There's so much noise pollution everywhere that you can barely relax, and yet nobody seems to mind. It's quite interesting, really.
