I kinda figured since the iPhone was touch that they'd start making iPods like that. I love touch screen.....a cool little milestone in technology.

Those nanos are cuter than the regular ones, but I'm gonna need something that hold a lot.

Yes. that's exactly what it is. But if you have wi-fi, I bet you could use skype or another similar program as a free phone.

iPod touch love

I've been waiting for this news for a while now as I need a new iPod.

However, the iPod touch just makes me lust more for an iPhone, as the iPhone is the iPod touch with more features and the ability to use the cool new iPod touch features (internet, youtube) anytime (due to your phone network) rather than just via Wifi.

If they release, as rumoured, a 16GB 3G-based iPhone in Europe next month (or whenever they finally do), I will be buying that in a heartbeat. In the meantime, I may just buy the 8GB version and settle for Edge. It would be the iPod touch hands down if the touch came with a 32gb option, but it doesn't, so the iPhone seems like a more sensible option. Particularly as I am also looking for a new phone at the moment. smile

I have a third gen 20G U2 iPod that is probably nearing the end of it’s days although I still use it regularly but I’ve been dying for video. Holding out past the release of the first video iPod or now the iPod Classic was tough.

I want the iPod touch but I’m concerned about the small storage. 8Gs is not even 2K songs and I don’t know if I can bring myself to spend what the 16G costs for 3,500 songs. The phone is out of the question since I’m with Verizon and don’t want the hassle of trying to break my contract and all the other fees. I like my phone as just a phone.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I would go for the 8GB model and cycle your favourite albums - perhaps just make a massive 8gb smart playlist that randomly selects music from your library so you never know what you're going to get on your iPod. smile

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do. I'll keep my essential music on there and have a playlist of updated tunes. I discovered I don’t need to carry my ENTIRE library with me anyway.

Love the nano update. The same resolution on a 2.0 inch screen drool
I think I'll get the new nano.

I like the Ipod Classic update too. The increased drive space is phenomenal.

The iPod Touch was really cool, and the features for an media player are great. But 16 gig of space for that much money

Steve Jobs was totally rocking the crotch bulge and visible penis line at this one. (see example below)

No - you see I thought I did, then about 3-4 weeks ago I went through it deleting all the shit I used to like and had only kept...well because I never deleted it lol - reduced my library from 60gb to roughly 30gb, and then I realised I go through phases of listening to selected artists that I can cycle, which has opened me up to now being able to get MP3 players less than 30gb. Thus I think I'll get either an iPhone or iPod touch. biggrin

Apple cuts iPhone price, updates iPods

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc. slashed the price of the iPhone by $200 Wednesday — a rare move for the company that typically discounts only older products. It also updated its iPod media players, introducing a model with a touch-screen and other iPhone features.

The 8-gigabyte iPhone will be $399 — $200 cheaper than the same model when it went on sale in June. The 4-gigabyte iPhone, which sold for $399, will be phased out. By comparison, the new touch-screen iPods will start at $299.

Analysts said the price drop would definitely boost sales, possibly allowing Apple to achieve its self-proclaimed goal of selling 1 million iPhones by the end of September.

But they also questioned the move, which is not consistent with Apple's standard marketing practice of lowering prices during a product's second or third update. Apple also typically keeps the price the same but adds new features and storage when a product is upgraded.

Apple stock dropped more than 5 percent after the price drop was announced, losing $7.40 to close at $136.76.

"It will absolutely help sales — but at what cost?" asked Tim Beyers, an analyst at The Motley Fool research and investment group. "People who bought the iPhone weeks or months ago must really be annoyed, and with good reason they might think twice about being the first to buy future Apple products. This smacks a little of desperation, and it's very unlike Apple."

Also Wednesday, CEO Steve Jobs unveiled updated iPods, including the version with a touch-sensitive screen, wireless Internet access and a Web browser. Unlike an iPhone, it can't make or receive phone calls.

The iPod Touch allows users to download songs wirelessly, and, eventually, will let people sample and buy digital tunes from any Starbucks in the United States that offers Wi-Fi Internet access.

The iPod Touch is less than a third of an inch thick and can be used for storing photos, music, videos and other digital data. It features the same 3.5-inch, touch-screen display as the iPhone, on which light finger touches allow the user to scroll through menus, and two fingers are used to resize pictures.

The iPod Touch also has built-in wireless Internet access and the Safari Web browser. The iPhone, which runs on AT&T Inc.'s cellular network, also supports Wi-Fi.

An 8-gigabyte iPod Touch will cost $299. A 16-gigabyte version will cost $399. It will be shipped worldwide starting later this month.

People using the iTunes Wi-Fi store will be able to download songs for the same price as the regular store, which charges 99 cents per song.

Starting in October, the Starbucks icon will light up on the iPod Touch whenever a user nears a Starbucks coffee shop that has Wi-Fi access. Users can then download the song that's playing in the shop or get a list of the 10 most recent songs played.

The Starbucks partnership begins at 600 stores in New York and Seattle on Oct. 2. In November, it will be available at 350 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, and by the end of next year it will be in all Starbucks with Wi-Fi nationwide.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Jobs, speaking at a media event in San Francisco, also showed off other iPod updates, including an iPod Nano with a 2-inch screen for watching movies and playing built-in games. The current version does not play videos.

"It's incredibly tiny. It's incredibly thin," Jobs said of the new Nano. "We think it's really, really beautiful."

The new Nano, which will be in stores starting this weekend, will come in a 4-gigabyte version for $149, and an 8-gigabyte version for $199.

Apple also announced it will be selling ring tones for the iPhone for 99 cents, plus the 99-cent cost of the song. Ring tones from more than 500,000 songs available on iTunes will go on sale next week.

Two things:

iPods suck: I've had three in less than two years.

I would be pissed if I bought an iPhone and the price dropped in less than 60 days. I was almost tempted to buy one, then I remember how much I hate AT&T and decided against it.

The Starbucks connection is completely ridiculous, at least to me. I try to stay away from that place as much as possible and if I’m ever in there and they’re playing a song I want, just pick up the CD in the “Now Playing” display.

I know a lot of iPhone buyers are hot about the big price drop but oh well. I can’t help but recall a few smug users who were quick to whip theirs out just days after purchase and brag about how they got it on the first day, etc. Now they want a discount. Oh well.

nod The Starbucks thing is the one thing I was like "UGH" with - so commercial and lame. Totally pointless, too. Bad apple!

They might get some money or a credit or something but part of me thinks hey, you chalked up $600 for a freakin' phone. Now's a fine time to think about $200 razz And some stood in line for hours.
