Wood, that is.

I have a very nice kitchen table and chairs I got for a steal from a friend who moved to San Francisco last year and it's wood with blue covered seats and that's just not me. I've been meaning to paint it and now that I'm moving I decided I'm starting it today so it can be done and I'll have a nice new kitchen set for my new apartment.

So - I was told last night I must strip it first.

Any advice before I go to Home Depot and just ask someone what the heck to do? I've never done it before. I have no idea what I'm doing.

I depends if the finish is an acrylic or oil based on there right now, chances are it will strip with some Nitromores

whatever you do...don't get it on you and you will have to makes sure you clean the stripper before you re-paint with white spirit or turpentine but it is the best stuff without a doubt

Wear gloves and a mask

This stuff should do both babes. It is not scary just it burns through paint so you can guess what it does to skin, and you have to wash down the item after otherwise the new stuff wont stick, it does do the job really well though

Trust me it isnt babe, it is simply that you are using a chemical to strip the varnish etc. If you do that and then leave residue there then the new finish wont stick. Just a process...strip...clean ....paint....its worth it

I'll even post pics when I'm done if I can. I'm painting it black with some red trim and I'm gonna get red fabric to re-cover the seats.

there are little packets at paint stores
with a solvent cloth inside. if the paint comes
off it's oilbased or some such thing...

i had a woman buy a little painted cabinet at my
sale yesterday. i asked her what she was going
to strip it with. she intended to just paint it
again so would test the original paint first to
see if it was oil based... and not completely strip it.
then she uses a strong mixture of TSP and a sanding sponge.
the TSP roughs up the original finish enough that
your new paint will stick. most times she said.

must wear gloves with tsp

Go to Home Depot first, they've got NEW, products that will make the job very easy!

I didn't have to strip it at all!




The guy at Home Depot told me to just sand it down good, prime it, and it's ready to go!

I've got primer on and am waiting for the first coat of trim to dry to do a second coat.

Then I'm off to the first coat of black.




Then hopefully a second coat of black tonight, let it dry out good overnight and do a high gloss spray finish overall tomorrow morning and I'm done!

Boy woman you are on a roll arent you? I am glad you didnt have to strip it... although i love all my wood that was a million times more work then i ever thought it would be!

I do not know if I already stripped the plates off the doors already, but I am ready to begin stripping the doors. LOTS of work.
