I'm a fan. Probably of the more moderate variety. Have been a fan though since I was a little kid when the For You album was released. When I was in 4th grade "Still Waiting" was the favorite song of all the girls in my class with crushes on boys in the playground lol. However, as fate would have it, time and circumstance helped me evolve from any illusions that Prince was the best thing since sliced bread...it's called "growing up" lol lol lol

Agreed!! My wife wants to go to Vegas to see him at 3121....so I know that when I see him live again, the purple blood will flow again...still not as deep as it was when P was the soundtrack to my intimate awakenings....but deep enough... lol

Okay, here is my story. It kinda also states what I think about Prince's music.

http://prince.org/msg/12/240147

Fan at 13 (When Doves Cry drew me in) and going FAM age 15, due to the ATWIAD 12"s.

Totally addict until 1991, after which Prince started following trends instead of setting them.
Still collected the actual stuff.

2001 joined Org. Got addicted to the peeps in chat, then moved to forums. Learned to distrust people online and cherish the beautiful peeps that did come through (and true).

Since 1998 I ammuch more of a casual fan, not liking everything he did, but at least he was still the best performer/singer/guitarist/musician I have the pleasure to see play live.

Then The Rainbow Children happened. And I saw the multi-coloured view of Prince's past narrowed so much I could not but resent an entire Prince album.

Ever since I am skeptic. This year's European gigs were the test. But even though the shows are good, they are too commercial for a non-casual Prince MUSIC fan; too bland.

Even though the aftershow was fun, it seems Prince is not much interested anymore in making challenging music, but much more in just hanging with friends. Just the occasional brilliance he used to have shines through (see review) in the form of a jam on Miles Davis' Tutu.

So for me, I will probably not go to see him anymore. I will just keep checking him out. I am too old for this shit. Play some Justice for me at Paradiso, that's it. New peeps that push the musical borders are fun to me.

aside from how you got into prince (i discovered him at about 5 with the controversy single) and how you feel about rainbow children (i think its one of his most brilliant works), i can co-sign that post.

i'll take the hungry, young, inspired artists who still have something to prove or, at least, still have a desire to impress for what they DO rather than what they DID.

Ah. Thing is, lyrics are almost as important to me as the music, and I just can't, can't, can't get passed those lyrics that seem so belittling to women in a way I haven't seen in his lyrics before (and this is womanising Prince we're talking about) and the way he views black american history/religion/the world that makes me shudder.

I hate religion when presented this way.

i understand the reasons for not liking it.

it's just that my opinion of art isn't so much wrapped up in whether i agree with the statement but rather the emotion, good or bad, the work can evoke. the rainbow children is not a record you just walk away from; you are affected in some way by that record regardless of being in agreement with it.

Normally I am not much wrapped up in it either, unless it is an artist I used to identify with so deeply in the past, hehehe. Prince is personal.
And it touches on many of the irks I have against religion. So the irritation/anger upon hearing it was much more than it would have been if it had been Björk or something.

no offense, but the effect it had on me was to forcibly remove it from my player and frisbee it across the highway....there was nothing remotely redeeming about TRC for me....at all....it was P at the height of artistic arrogance...the "field of dreams" concept..."If I make it, they will buy it....and love it...." disbelief

just my twocents

Me neither. I still think it is a painful record and proves that religion can fuck up the best of us. In the old days, Prince's view of eternity included everyone. Now it seems not everybody is allowed on the boat.

Exactly!!

...though I find it odd that he is a member of a religious sect that has this view on homosexuality...

have taken the stance that God intended marriage to be between a man and woman and that homosexuality is a sin. They also feel that God disapproves of those who practice homosexuality, and feel that same-sex marriages are also unacceptable. They feel that homosexuals can learn to abstain from the behavior and that God can help homosexuals overcome their same-sex attractions and homosexual tendencies so that they can gain God's blessings.

....when he has a significant number of gay fans.....I'm sure HE personally doesn't feel that way, but I just see it as a really weird paradox....

Kinda. Not really mad about anything after TRC, but I'm still a casual fan. I like the odd track on the last few albums and I still dig into the unreleased stuff and back catalogue pretty much daily.

I'm a huge fan of his pre-2001 stuff. This new shit is all watered down and bland as fuck. It's nice to hear some honest opinions on the GD, on the P forum people act a fool when you criticise P's new music.

nod To the point where they actually hurl personal insults at you. It's pathetic. They're like base animals in a cage. They shouldn't really be alive, to be honest - they're pitiful, shallow excuses for humans.

Of course I'm a Prince fan, and a big one at that. And everyone here is to some degree a Prince fan, or at least was at one point. I think it's really lame to bash the Music forum, as this is a Prince site after all. If you think the forum here is full of Purple Kool-Aid junkies, you should have seen NPGMC.
Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!
