i love a good scary movie. but they are far and few between. they've become too predictable or so far fetched. or just plain dumb. i liked "SAW". the 1st one anyway. then ending freaked me the fuck out. i was not expecting that. haven't seen the other two. i recently saw the movie "Hostil" and laughed. there's one called the "Invasion" i think, with Nicole Kidman that looks interesting. but i tend to like the psychological thrillers.

what is the "Messengers" about? i've not heard of that one.

It is hard to come by truly great horror movies, but there are a few fairly recent ones that deserve praise:

May
High Tension

Hostel is Gore Horror. nod

Best "jump" horror I've seen in a while is The Ring, but that's hardly new anymore.

Silent Hill's not bad, either.

it's more than just a gore horror though. When I think "gore horror", I think of the likes of Wolf Creek, or House of Wax which I saw the other day. Hostel's a cut above - i'm lookin forward to the second one also.

There are no more "GOOD" or "GREAT" horror films. But, really, who could you blame, huh? Look at the choices directors and filmmakers of the past/present have had to and still have to deal with. "You gotta use the advanced technology to your advantage. YOU GOTTA USE THE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!!!" That's all they hear. All of the people behind them and in front of them. Those people keep telling them the same things. So, they take that advice to the grave. The overall evolution of special effects technology doesn't allow for any excitement or give you a chance to make your own idea out of it.

And, I don't mean that we should "STILL" be stuck in the times back when movies like "The Fog" and many other "70's Horror Movies". This type of technological evolution gives a plausible reason for the overall element of surprise that has been snatched away from your television. I'd hate to say this, but, for me, "The 80's" was my favorite year of great horror movies that featured perfect examples of how to use the technology that was available, at the time.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" (Okay, well, at least the first one "REALLY" was genuinely frightening for me. Overall, though, "Freddie Krueger" was supposed to be and ultimately is seen as maybe the most charismatic leading horror protagonist...."EVER"!!! lol ), "Jason", "Halloween" (With the exception of the third iteration), and the one that ended off "The 80's Horror /ing and -ing Era" within the beginning of it's own series...."Chucky" (Another Charismatic one)! I know I might be rambling on, but I am trying to say that "Horror" has lost it's touch since the early nineties.

Edit: Oh, but I'd like to say one thing different about "The Seventies Horror Movies". If there's one thing for sure, I actuallty think that the work all over "The Exorcist" was really good. And, quite frankly, "The Exorcist" should probably be and most likely is considered the absolute greatest "Horror Film" ever made. Many people would argue and standby that. Sooooo.....
