I can't sew, maybe a button or whatever. I hemmed my pants with a stapler and masking tape once, it was faster.

We used to sew our A-line school skirts in and hem them, so we had tight mini skirts going on.. well we did until the nuns went apeshit and demanded we let them out again. mad

Well no matter how bad our sewing was, that was a MUST, cos our skirts were horrible! shake

But I did textiles and fashion, so I guess I can be a bit of a whizz when I can be bothered.. wink

I had a non-regulation skirt at school that I bought at sussan (this goes with that at sussan) halfway through my last year of school they noticed but my mum told them she was not paying $80 for 4 months of wear out of the ugly A-line one they expected her to buy me evillol

Very basic, both by hand and with machine.

In the next couple days I need to sew a binding on the carpets for my Jaguar. It takes an invisible stitch that I am not looking forward to.
Le prego di non toccare la macchina per favore!

I can only sew when I'm properly motivated. For example when I was doing my military service and they told us that we could go to bed when we were done sewing the flag and some other things onto our uniforms. I was done in less than five minutes, lol.

Teacher

I'm not a man but I sure can sew - used to sew all my medieval dresses, cloaks, shirts, skirts etc. I miss that actually, unless it's velvet cos that's a fucking bitch to sow.

I realised I actually still have two of the dresses I made so I took some pics and here they are:

First, a pale grey velvet ( pissed ) dress in 14th century style with 14 buttons, fake fur collar and sleeve lining. You wear another dress with long sleeves underneath, and a frock underneath that - HOT in the summer.

The buttons, they were a bitch to do:

One of the sleeves, these are purely for decoration. I made them so they're just barely above ground when I walk with my arms down.

The collar:

Then we have the 15th/16th century dress, empire cut as was the style then. This you also wear a long sleeved dress underneath, a puffy billowy one that's supposed to peek out everywhere there are holes - under the arms and in the holes on the sleeves. NOT supposed to peek out at the wrists though no no no!

A shot of the immense width of the skirt, you can imagine how long it took to hem that shit bored

A close-up of the decoration around the throat:

Here you can see the holes underneath the arm. It makes for superb ability to move which was rare back then.

And the sleeves with the holes and the strings of pearl:

Buttons on shirts, blazers, etc. Anything tougher than that goes to the seamstress.

i do a mean button, and will fix a busted seam.
but won't trust myself to hem my own pants
or anything with fine fabric.

when an underwire breaks or pokes out of the material in my bra
i am forever taking the stitching out to fix them
but my handiwork doing them back up would not make my
home ec teacher happy lol... oh well. it works

you know what's interesting? i bet no one darns their socks anymore.
my mom kept a lightbulb in with her darning wool to use in the sock
when she would mend holes. i have never darned a sock ever.

I sew. I do simply things: table cloths, napkins, pillow cases, hemming.
