Madeleine McCann - Police Statement

Even I, being cynical, thought the worst the second Madeleine wasn't found within 2 days of her kidnap, and to be honest I'm fairly sure she was killed the night she was taken and thrown in the sea.

However, don't you think it was quite irresponsible of the Police to issue a statement saying that she's most likely dead? As far as I see it, it encourages people not to be bothered in looking out for her anymore, hurts the parents emotionally on an unimaginable scale, and says "we can't be fucked anymore" even though they haven't closed the case. I was reading a criticism of it on the BBC and agreed wholeheartedly that it was a bad decision by the Police to say that.

Your opinions?

I mean, don't get me wrong - I think she's dead - but that doesn't mean the Police should outright say "Yeah, she's probably dead, pack your bags."

Agreed on all points including my belief that the poor girl is deceased.

It's tragic, on all counts. I hope they have some clue who is responsible. If they do, maybe their statements are aimed at scaring that person: "You'll be charged with murder, not kidnapping. So, give yourself up and cut a deal with us..."

Yeah, well I guess they got tired of trying to explain away the blood in the hotel room. I also think they made this statement to put even more pressure on the parents and/or their dinner party.

nod But Police are notorious for being bad at dealing with crimes involving Foreigners, both in Europe and in England.

From what I have read it will be tested to confirm whether in fact it is hers or not, and I truly hope it's not hers pray

They have not ruled out their suspect yet, whom they are going to check his yard.

I do hope she is found. Give her parents some peace of mind rose

There is a lesson here, never leave young children unattended, always keep them in your sight or have a reliable babysitter.

nod

One British paper got slaughtered for saying the parents were irresponsible but, to a large extent, I think they were - leaving children (of whom the youngest is 3!) in an apartment with the windows open and balcony door unlocked whilst you go out for a meal is madness to me! I would never even consider doing that.
