My DVD Burner Isn't Working!

It'll recognise DVDs but not CDs. I'm gutted!!!

I found the box it came in, but there's no receipt inside. I usually keep receipts inside empty boxes. sad

The order-picking document from the store is still taped to the front of the box - so maybe they'll take that as proof of purchase as it has their catalogue number on and stuff - but no date.

Do you think they'll take it back without the actual date of purchase? It's got evidence of it being from that particular store but no date of purchase. I don't want a refund - just an exchange. sad

They might if the serial number shows manufacture date and it is less that 13 months from manufacture (some suppliers all 1 month from manufacture to sale and then 12 month warranty starts) good luck mate biggrin

just phone the store/company, explain the problem and ask them. you don't HAVE to have a receipt as proof of purchase by statutory law, altho it's up to the store as to what they want to see. if its a replacement rather than refund you might be okay

i would check that its not your setup, or the media you are using. and make sure the firmware is up to date

Oh, the "Manufactured Date" is printed on the box as November 2005 - but I only bought it last year. I'm unsure of which month though.

I found an old Argos catalogue for Spring/Summer 2006 and it's in there - the same model and everything.

The order picking form has numerical codes on it which may mean something. I checked their website and it states that an order number will suffice as proof of purchase in the absence of a receipt: http://www.argos.co.uk/st...efunds.htm

I just don't know when exactly last year I bought it. I know it's in last year's Spring/Summer catalogue, but Spring is March/April/May and Summer is June/July/August... I could have bought it last March for all I know. sad

I may telephone them and ask.

I know that it'd only cost £40.00 to buy a new one but at the minute I have less than 40p in the bank. sad

Well, I thought that might go in my favour.

No, it's definitely the drive itself. If it was the drivers or firmware, it wouldn't recognise any discs - not just CDs. DVDRW/CDRW combi drives use two separate lasers - one for DVDs and one for CDs. If it didn't recognise DVDs too, then I'd assume that it could be a software problem, but as it is, it seems to be mechanical. It looks like the CD laser's died or been knocked out of alignment.

Bugger. neutral

i'm pretty sure by what you describe it's not faulty if it recognises dvds but not cds. did it ever recognise cds?

and do you mean proper silver pressed audio cds, or burned cdr's or you are trying to burn to a cdr and it wont recognise it?

if the media isn't good, sometimes the burner won't recognise it, sometimes flashing firmware helps

if your aspi layer isn't correct that may also cause problems. you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling your burning software, ensuring you have the most up to date version, or download and reinstall the aspi drivers

if you paid by credit card and still have the statement, that might help. argos will take any old crap back at times if you have a receipt, even if you break it yourself by opening it up, plugging it in and dropping a screwdriver inside wink

Yeah, until today.

Any CDs... Silver-pressed factory CDs; Blank and written CDRs and CDRWs; Redbook; Orangebook; Whitebook...

Did this as a last resort at FlashFix.com

I used ASPICheck and ForceASPI. It's not an ASPI issue. It's definitely mechanical.

I never pay for goods via Debit Card as I can't keep track of my finances. I withdraw the money and then spend cash. In any case, the order picking note says that it was item 2 of 2. The exact sum wouldn't be on my bank statements even if I had paid by card.

I'll just have to get another one on pay-day. neutral

if you buy another of the same item as argos, just keep the good one, clean up the old one and stick it back in the packaging the new one came in, and return it to argos. just tell them it doesn't work and you want a refund. if the item is faulty you are within your rights to demand a refund. tell them you don't want to risk getting another one that doesn't work so you want your money back so you can get another model elsewhere

btw www.svp.co.uk and ebuyer.co.uk are a couple of cheap places to try if you don't try the argos trick
