That people think there isn't...and, conversely (at times), that there is... i think 'soul' is a word to describe an organic quality that we still don't quite understand and that we still can't quite define, but s-o-u-l seems to be the closest we've gotten so far. and not to get all andy rooney here, but you ever notice how nobody discusses mediocre souls? everyone is an "old soul" or a "fragile soul" or a "brave soul" or else they're "soulless". you never hear someone say, "yeah, ralph was just kind of a boring soul. not good, not bad. his aura was just kind of, you know, BEIGE."

I believe animals do have souls (assuming humans do, which I'm not sure of) but I still eat meat.
I don't think there's anything inherantly wrong with eating meat. We were created that way. Some animals are made to eat meat. Humans are made to eat anything, so it's their choice. My only concern is ethical treatment & health. My Legacy

Yes, it is incredibly moving to watch a former Klansman paraphrase Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech.

Did you hear Senator Robert Byrd yesterday, discussing the Michael Vick situation on the Senate floor? It was an oratroy display that was quite impressive and moving. Here's a news link, but you really have to hear him to appreciate the timbre of his words. I'm looking for an audio link. http://www.newsvine.com/_...s-barbaric Sen. Byrd Calls Dog Fights 'Barbaric'

(AP Photo/Steve Helber) WASHINGTON — Allegations of a vicious dogfighting ring prompted an unusually emotional speech in the Capitol Thursday, as the Senate's longest-serving member fought tears and called for God's judgment on those who promote such activities. "Barbaric," Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., shouted four times in a Senate chamber that was mostly empty except for two dozen somewhat startled tourists. "Let that word resound from hill to hill and from mountain to mountain, from valley to valley across this broad land," he thundered, raising his right hand. "May God help those poor souls who would be so cruel. Barbaric! Hear me!" Federal agents have charged Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three others with procuring and training pit bulls for fighting in Virginia and elsewhere. Investigators say some losing dogs died in the pit or were later electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot. Byrd, 89, said he would not prejudge the men's guilt or innocence, but he left no doubts about his sentiments. "I am confident that the hottest places in hell are reserved for the souls of sick and brutal people who hold God's creatures in such brutal and cruel contempt," he said. "One is left wondering," he said. "Who are the real animals: the creatures inside or outside the ring?" When he finished, Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who sometimes brings his Portuguese water dogs to work, said, "Great speech, Bob." As Byrd left the chamber, a Senate page and TV reporter shook his hand and thanked him, and a young woman had her photo taken with him. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
