Clearly, and it's not ultimately helpful. hug

I really don't think that killing animals is barbaric. Raising them in factory farms IS.

You're wrong about not needing animal foods in the modern world. Some people don't feel well on a vegan diet. People have different needs. I wish that weren't true, but it is. I do think that people who need it have a responsibility to get their food from sources that aren't hideously cruel, though.

Just to play devil's advocate, how laid-back and openminded is a person supposed to be when they see something in the world that they believe is unjust and cruel? Aren't we supposed to speak up in the face of that? Where's the line? rose

I think that everyone on all sides of this should be open minded enough to see and respect the other perspective....I'm a meat eater, but I don't hate on vegans about their choices...whereas sometimes, they can get downright self righteous about the whole "don't eat meat" thing....to me, whatever floats your boat....in the end, we will all be judged for our choices...and only the saved will walk thru the gates....the rest will burn in the fiery lakes.....

this is how it sometimes seems to me when vegans get up on their soapboxes.....just my twocents

believe me, "radical" meateaters can be just as offensive and intrusive as the vegan soapboxers. i would rather "preach" by example than by coersion, though i'm not always successful in that goal...but i see less-than-charitable behavior on both sides of this ideological divide. it just reminds me that if i am tired of polarizing attitudes, i have to try to project the non-polarizing behavior that i want to see happen in the world. wish me luck. lol

A little off-topic, but I saw the word "barbaric" in a previous post and thought this deserved mention (it does deal with dogs and their worth in nature).

Did you hear Senator Robert Byrd yesterday, discussing the Michael Vick situation on the Senate floor? It was an oratroy display that was quite impressive and moving.

Here's a news link, but you really have to hear him to appreciate the timbre of his words. I'm looking for an audio link.

Sen. Byrd Calls Dog Fights 'Barbaric'

WASHINGTON — Allegations of a vicious dogfighting ring prompted an unusually emotional speech in the Capitol Thursday, as the Senate's longest-serving member fought tears and called for God's judgment on those who promote such activities.

"Barbaric," Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., shouted four times in a Senate chamber that was mostly empty except for two dozen somewhat startled tourists.

"Let that word resound from hill to hill and from mountain to mountain, from valley to valley across this broad land," he thundered, raising his right hand. "May God help those poor souls who would be so cruel. Barbaric! Hear me!"

Federal agents have charged Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three others with procuring and training pit bulls for fighting in Virginia and elsewhere. Investigators say some losing dogs died in the pit or were later electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot.

Byrd, 89, said he would not prejudge the men's guilt or innocence, but he left no doubts about his sentiments.

"I am confident that the hottest places in hell are reserved for the souls of sick and brutal people who hold God's creatures in such brutal and cruel contempt," he said.

"One is left wondering," he said. "Who are the real animals: the creatures inside or outside the ring?"

When he finished, Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who sometimes brings his Portuguese water dogs to work, said, "Great speech, Bob." As Byrd left the chamber, a Senate page and TV reporter shook his hand and thanked him, and a young woman had her photo taken with him.

The line is respect. You can put your point over but there is no need to imply a person is sick, barbaric and brainless along with the use of sarcasm. I have no problem accepting the point, just respect me for my viewpoint.

I do think that if you can't bear to look it in it's eyes, and kill an animal and skin it and get the meat yourself, then you might just be an unwitting subject of an intelligent ruling class system if you eat meat.

Now, if you can do that, if you have no problem eating your dog or cat or horse either, then it is your rightful nature.

Now if you have no problem eating people you feel are useless to you, then you are Hannibal Lecter.
