In a humorous way, I can go back and forth. If someone becomes mean spirited, and inapproporiate, I'll say so. After that, they're not worth dealing with.
As an example, in one forum (M&M) someone became nasty and referred to another as a "fucking idiot". I suggested the individual pick up a dictioinary and find a more civil way of expressing himself. Didn't have any more contact with the orger. Not worth the bother.

i thought that the whole point of dishing it out was because you wasn't going to take anything from anyone.

Well, by dishing out and taking it I really meant in any kinda of way. I was thinking about this after having a hilarious (drunk) conversation with a friend last night. They are great at being open and saying anything to anyone but when the tables are turned they get all awkward and uncomfortable.
